Volleyball General Information

We are excited to share information for the 2017-2018 volleyball season, which will begin in August.

About Meridian Volleyball

Meridian Volleyball holds two State Championship titles. Varsity Volleyball and JV Red 9/10 Volleyball won the 2016 TCSAAL State Championships. This year, we expect more wonderful successes for our volleyball program.

Meridian School will have a maximum of five league volleyball teams for girls for the 2017 Volleyball season. Based on registration for tryouts for 2017 Meridian volleyball, we anticipate offering one Varsity  team, one JV 9/10 team, and three middle school teams. (There will not be a JV 9-12 team this year. The league is not offering JV 9-12 for volleyball during the 2017-2018 school year.)

Parents are needed to serve at games in many roles: scoring, concessions, line judge, entry sales, etc. Participation on the volleyball team includes an expectation that parents will commit to serving in these roles throughout the season.

Meridian anticipates offering five competitive volleyball teams.

How Tryouts Will Work

All of Meridian's volleyball coaches will participate in each of the tryout sessions. For Middle School Tryouts, the high school volleyball coaches will run drills while the middle school coaches are front and center observing.  Likewise, for Varsity and JV Tryouts, the middle school volleyball coaches will run the drills while the coach of the team that is forming as a result of this tryouts session will be observing. All of our volleyball coaches will work together to make tryouts run smoothly and to help form each team.

For Varsity and JV candidates, participation in the High School Skills Assessment from 8:00-10:00am is required. Based on this skills assessment, the coaches will let the student athletes know if they are invited back to the Varsity Tryouts at 1:00pm, the JV Tryouts at 2:00pm or neither.  For those 9th and 10th grade student athletes asked to tryout for the Varsity team who do not make that team, they will be encouraged to stay for the JV tryouts.

Meridian has the resources to support five competitive volleyball teams. We anticipate forming a Varsity team, a JV 9/10 team and three Middle School teams. Each girl trying out will learn if she made a team and if so,  which one, by the end of tryouts. To secure her space on the team, her participation fees must be paid the day of tryouts. Please bring a check.

Volleyball is extremely competitive at Meridian. Please expect some cuts.

  • Middle School Volleyball Chances: Three teams of 12 to 14 volleyball players each = 36-42 volleyball players.  52 middle school girls have registered to tryout. If all 52 girls tryout, 10-16 girls will be cut.
  • High School Volleyball Chances: Two  teams of 9-12 volleyball players each = 19-24 volleyball players. 31 high school girls have registered to try out. If all 31 girls tryout, 7-12 girls will be cut. Please note that 11th and 12th grade girls are eligible for Varsity only as our JV team is a JV 9/10 team this year. (The league is not offering JV 9-12 this year.)

Important: If you registered to try out and you decide not to try out, please email Meridian-athletics@mwschool.org as soon as possible. We are planning teams and everything that entails (coaches, practices, games, uniforms, etc.) around having Varsity, JV 9/10 and three Middle School teams. All of which is based on the numbers reported in the registration.  Girls who tryout and do not make any team will be refunded the $30 registration fee. If a student athlete does not to tryout, the registration fee is not refundable.

If a minimum number of qualified student athletes are not available to form a team, that team will not form. For Varsity, the minimum is 9. For JV, it is 10. For each Middle School team, it is 12.

Minimum Skills

To help prepare your player, the coaches have offered the following minimum skill criteria for each team level.

Varsity

  • Can jump serve
  • Can spot serve (overhand)
  • Has understanding and can execute the 3-step approach
  • Can pass a free ball to target (8 out of 10)

Junior Varsity

  • Serve overhand (7 out of 10)
  • Has general passing technique and form
  • Can pass to target (6 out of 10)
  •

Middle School

  • Ability to serve over the net either overhand or underhand from the end line
  • Ability to pass the ball
