Thomas Oldfield

Tom graduated from the University of Cambridge in England in 2015 with a Bachelor's and a Master's in Mathematics. He then moved to the US with his now-wife Vivi, where they both started PhD programs at UT (Tom in Mathematics and Vivi in Biochemistry).

At UT, Tom developed a love of teaching mathematics through inquiry and joined the UTeach program while completing his graduate work and teaching classes there. In the summer of 2019, he defended his thesis.

Dr. Oldfield's main focus while teaching maths is in having students produce mathematics rather than just using it. The process of creating mathematical ideas is essential to learning and understanding and provides students with a much more accurate picture of what it is that mathematicians actually do!

Tom lives in Austin with his wife, Vivi and two cats, Mika and Cowboy. Though not a Texas native, he has quickly adapted to the land of Dr. Pepper, barbeque, and Whataburger.
