Week of April 8, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Brooke Knight, PYP Principal

Happy Wednesday, Primary Families,

We hope you enjoyed the long weekend. While the extra days gave us a chance to pause, we are already back into a busy and exciting week here at school. Tomorrow marks our first STAAR assessment of the year for our primary students, with students in 3rd - 5th grade taking the Reading test. Next week, our 5th graders will take the Science STAAR on Thursday, April 16. As always, we simply ask that students come ready to do their best. We are proud of the hard work they have put in all year long.

This week is Assistant Principal Appreciation Week, and I feel especially thankful to work alongside two outstanding assistant principals. Ms. Gabriel and Mr. Reyes each bring unique strengths, perspectives, and a deep commitment to our students and staff. Their daily dedication does not go unnoticed, and we truly appreciate the ways they show up for our school community each day.

Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for our annual Arts and Science Fest on Saturday, April 18. This is always such a fun, family friendly event and a wonderful way to celebrate the creativity and curiosity of our students and community.

Finally, we are already beginning to plan for the upcoming school year. As part of this process, we value your input as we thoughtfully create class lists. Our goal is always to build balanced classrooms and place each student in an environment where they can thrive. Please take a few moments to complete the Parent Feedback and Student Placement 2026-2027 by Friday, May 8 to help guide this process.

Wishing you a wonderful rest of the week!

It’s Assistant Principal Appreciation Week, and we want to give a shout out to Rachel Gabriel and Dion Reyes! They have both jumped right in this year and show such care and support for our students. Drop them a note of thanks if you see them this week!

STAAR Testing Schedule (add to your calendar)

STAARState-mandated STAAR tests take place soon for grades 3-5. The purpose of these tests is to show where our students are in their learning journey.

Now is a great time to start having calm, supportive conversations with your students to help ease any testing anxiety. Remind them to take a deep breath, stay confident, and simply do their best. Students do not need to prepare for the tests, but they should get plenty of sleep the night before and eat a healthy breakfast that morning. See STAAR page.

Academics

IB Initiative: The Transdisciplinary Theme of Who We Are

Who We Are  •  Where We Are in Place and Time  •  How We Express Ourselves

How the World Works  •  How We Organize Ourselves  •  Sharing the Planet

The Primary Years Program asks schools to organize their curriculum in relation to six themes that have relevance through time and around the world. IB is adjusting the descriptions of these themes with an overall guiding statement and three supporting statements. The first of these themes is Who We Are, whose descriptor is an inquiry into identity as individuals and as part of a collective through:

  • physical, emotional, social and spiritual health and well-being
  • relationships and belonging
  • learning and growing

Children develop their sense of identity through their relationships, their personal experiences, their culture, and their community. As parents, you share your beliefs and values, your culture, and your sense of right and wrong. Children learn about differences in these as they engage with others and eventually develop their own sense of self that incorporates their own unique perspective on the world.

At Meridian, all grades study the theme of Who We Are through the following central ideas:

  • Kindergarten - Our relationships impact ourselves and others.
  • 1st Grade - Our understanding grows through learning and reflection.
  • 2nd Grade - Individuals and experiences can influence our values.
  • 3rd Grade - Communities foster well-being
  • 4th Grade - Significant events and people help promote growth.
  • 5th Grade - Relationships influence identity.
