FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Brooke Knight, PYP Principal

Happy Wednesday, Primary Families!

Tomorrow, Thursday, February 12, we celebrate Be Sweet to Others Day. This intentional day gives our students an opportunity to take action by showing kindness and compassion in ways that truly matter. Through small but meaningful acts of service, students live out the IB Learner Profile trait of Caring as they reflect on how their choices impact others. Please see below for details on how each grade level will serve our community.

Students may exchange Valentine cards and may include a small, non food/candy item. For dress, students may choose to participate by wearing a Valentine or kindness themed shirt paired with uniform bottoms or attire in celebration of Black History Month.

Tomorrow evening, we are excited to host our Second Annual Black History Month Jamboree, a special event that brings our community together to celebrate history, culture, and the voices and contributions of Black leaders past and present. Additional details can be found below.

Our lost and found is filling up quickly. While we know this is a frequent reminder, please label all clothing, lunchboxes, and water bottles with your child’s first and last name. This helps us return lost items. If you are on campus and know your child is missing an item, we invite you to take a moment to check the lost and found.

If you have not yet completed the Play It Safe OPT IN form, please do so as soon as possible. We must have a form on file for every student and we appreciate those who have already submitted.

As a reminder, there will be no school for students on Friday, February 13 or Monday, February 16. We look forward to welcoming students back on campus on Tuesday, February 17.

As always, we appreciate your continued support and value our partnership in helping every student succeed. If you have any questions or if there is anything we can support with, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you,

Brooke Knight

PYP Principal

IB Initiative: The Learner Profile Trait of Principled

This quarter, our IB Initiative each week will focus on one of the learner profile traits.

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflective

Principled: two characters shake hands

Ask a child what it means to be principled and they will usually say it means doing the right thing even if no one is looking. This is a great foundation to a deeper understanding. According to IB, to be principled is to act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere.

Principled people take responsibility for their actions and their consequences. This week, our exploration of this trait on the announcements will help us see some key components of being principled:

  • Let your principles (your beliefs and values) guide your actions.
  • Notice problems in your world and take action to try to solve them.
  • Be willing to stand up for what you believe is right.
  • Inspire others to join you as you stand up for your beliefs.
  • Have the honesty and courage it takes to try to bring change.
  • Open the door for others to succeed (not only focusing on yourself).

Find activities and book ideas on Meridian’s website to extend the discussion of what it means to be principled at home.

Celebrating Be Sweet to Others Day!

Each year, our primary students celebrate Be Sweet to Others Day with grade-level service projects. Here’s what each grade is doing!

  • Kindergarten  - Gift baskets for firefighters and police officers
  • 1st grade - Canned and boxed goods drive for the Round Rock Serving Center
  • 2nd grade - Collecting gently used clothes and blankets for Quail Valley Ministries
  • 3rd grade - Care baskets for custodians, cafe, and nursing staff at Meridian
  • 4th grade - Making toys for animals at the Williamson County Animal Shelter
  • 5th grade - Walk for Water to learn about the lack of clean water around the world

Activities connected with Be Sweet to Others Day go on throughout the year. Soon, fifth graders will fundraise help contribute to a water project in Africa. Earlier in the year, kindergartners got to learn fire safety from firefighters. Second graders completed an Empathy Walk on Tuesday where they tried different playground surfaces barefoot to see what it might feel like to have no shoes.
