Alumni Spotlight: Abigail Sirngot

Alumni Spotlight

Abigail Sirngot, Class of 2025

We love hearing what our alumni are learning and doing after they graduate! This series spotlights alumni and will run throughout the year.

Abigail Sirngot, Class of 2025, is finishing up her first semester at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She was just accepted into the Turner Scholars Program, a four year academic program meant to guide students through their college journey. The program offers academic counseling, designated study facilities, and a bright community of learners. They offer a close-knit community environment through community dinners and networking events.

She’s settled into the new city as she studies biology on a Pre-Health track, with a goal to become a Physician Assistant or an Anesthesiologist Assistant. She answered a quick Q&A for current Meridian Students:

How has your first semester been going? What led you to SMU?

“It's been really great getting to be a part of a new city and meeting new people,” Sirngot said. “SMU's campus is super beautiful, which is such a bonus for me as my walks to class are super calming. For me, what drew me to SMU was the city and the various opportunities. They offer a lot of different programs and scholarship opportunities, which is why it was the best fit for me.”

Do you have any advice for 11th/12th graders at Meridian to help make the transition smoother?

“I would say to put yourself out there. The first few weeks were very much out of my comfort zone, as I was constantly meeting new people. It's ok to feel a bit uncomfortable the first few weeks, but as you start getting into your routines and adjusting, it begins to become your new normal. I'd definitely say the IB program helped me adjust to the course load that I have and helped with a more seamless transition.”

Are there some ways Meridian has helped prepare you for college?

“I'd say Meridian helped me become a better writer. I find writing papers and essays for my classes a lot easier than most. A lot of the repetitive literary analysis, along with written responses, has helped me greatly in my writing class.”

Anything else you'd like to share?

“Don't be too intimidated by college because it really is what you make it! I'd say keeping a positive attitude is best when going into any new environment, especially one away from home.”
