Heifer Ranch: 8th Grade Class Trip

It was a fantastic experience of team building and simulating life in poverty in Appalachia (USA), Guatemala, Thailand, Tibet, Zambia, an urban slum, and a refugee camp.  When reflecting back, students said they learned a great deal both about what it must be like to live without knowing whether they would have enough food to eat and living in conditions that are common around the world such as cramped quarters, sleeping on the floor, no climate control, electronics, electricity, et cetera. Many students commented that they only experienced this for one night, and it really brought home what it might be like for this to be one's day-to-day existence.  They deepened empathy for others' experience and learned a great deal about teamwork to solve common problems.
