College Admissions FAQs
Here are some quick links that might be helpful to you:
Common Application: www.commonapp.org. This is your go-to application for most colleges! And their very useful Common App help center is available 24/7. All documents (application, transcripts, teacher recs) are uploaded one time and used for all colleges.
ApplyTexas: www.applytexas.org This application platform is typically used only by public colleges in Texas. Although Common App is the preferred application, students may choose to use this for Texas schools in order to take advantage of the Texas Free Application Week (new in 2025; the 2nd week in October). Note that individual transcripts must be sent for each college when using this app.
Transcript requests: For students using Common App, simply complete FERPA Agreement and invite your Counselor (Mrs. Gregg or Mr. Manuszak). Your transcript will be uploaded for all schools to use. If using ApplyTexas or any other application, you must complete this form for each college you apply to: Senior Transcript Request Google Form Please allow 10 days for transcripts to be submitted.
NOTE: Texas A&M does not accept transcripts, but instead requires students to self-report grades on STARS. This is also encouraged by Baylor and many out-of-state colleges. Self-reported Transcript and Academic Record System (STARS)
Testing: Many colleges are "test optional" for SAT and ACT. If a college says they are test optional, you have to take them at their word that they truly will not let this disadvantage you if you do not send scores. However, if your scores are very strong relative to your college it may still be to your advantage to submit. Most colleges require that test scores must be submitted directly from College Board or ACT to be used for admission.
Texas Success Initiative (TSI): Testing requirement only at public universities in Texas. All students are expected to meet this standard before graduation. Students may exempt this requirement by submitting the following test scores:
SAT - 530 Math / 480 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) (no combined score requirement)
ACT - 22 Math / 40 combined score on English + Reading
If you have not exempted the TSI there will be a TSI exam offered at Meridian this year. Further information is available at:
Income eligibility guidelines for testing and application fee waivers:
Demonstrated interest: Some schools do not consider this, but many do. Be sure to look on the college website for opportunities to do a virtual visit or other activities to show your interest.
Supplemental resumes: This is your chance to let college admission officers get to know you! Just be honest and provide the schools with a complete overview of what you do with your time outside of the classroom. (work, volunteer, school clubs, community organizations, sports, hobbies - everything can be important!)
