Technology Requirements (BYOD)

BYOD - Bring Your Own Device (Grades 8-12)

Meridian students use technology on a daily basis to conduct research, write papers, and so much more. For this reason, all Meridian students in grades 8-12 are expected to bring their own device to school on a daily basis. We refer to this as “Bring Your Own Device” or “BYOD.”

Students are responsible for the care of their own device. They should bring the device to school each day, fully charged, and ready to use. While electrical outlets are available throughout the building, no charging stations will be in place for quick-charges. New Chromebooks will generally hold a charge for a full day.

Optional (Grades 6-7)

Grades 6 – 7 are also allowed to bring their own device. We recognize that students prefer the consistency of using the same device. We will still have Chromebooks available for 6th – 7th graders in need.

BYOD FAQs

Why is it necessary for students in grades 8-12 to participate in BYOD?

Students use technology to access assignments, conduct research, and complete both classwork and homework. We've found that students perform better when they have one device to rely on for use at school and home.

When should my student start bringing a personally owned device to school?

Students are encouraged to bring their own device starting on the first day of school.

What kind of devices are acceptable for BYOD purposes?

Acceptable Devices:  Apple / Chromebook / Windows - Laptops or Tablets.

Smart phones are NOT an acceptable for BYOD.

What is the recommended Chromebook configuration?

Chromebooks are 'netbooks' that do not require the same amount of storage and memory as regular computers, so whatever your budget is will determine your configuration.  Any of the following configurations will work fine:

RAM2gb4gb8gb

Storage 32gb 64gb 128gb 256gb 512gb

Processor i3 i5 i7

Will Meridian lease new Chromebook devices as they have done in the past?

Leasing a device is no longer an option that we are able to provide.

Does Meridian recommend a certain retailer or brand?

Meridian does not recommend one vendor over another. Devices can be purchased anywhere electronics are sold.

Is financial assistance available for families who need support to participate in BYOD?

Yes, financial assistance and/or payment plans are available for those who need it. The business office will work with families to ensure that all students are able to participate in BYOD. Please contact businessoffice@mwschool.org with questions and/or to request financial assistance.

What happens if my student forgets to bring his/her device to school?

We have one technology cart available in the Mays library that holds one set of extra devices. Students who forget their device at home can check out a device (from the librarian) to use for the day but please note that 1) these devices are checked out on a first come, first served basis; and 2) students will not be permitted to check out devices on a regular basis.

What happens if my student loses their device or what if the device is damaged at school?

Students are responsible for their own device at all times, so we strongly suggest that you purchase a protective carrying case. Meridian accepts no liability against damage or theft. Please encourage students to lock up devices in their locker when not in use (during PE, for example), and advise them to never leave devices on the floor where they can be stepped on.

What rules must students follow in regards to acceptable use?

Students will use these devices during school hours for school intended purposes only. Students will not be able to use them for streaming video or other intense recreational purposes prior to the start of school, during lunch breaks, or after school due to the limitations of the Meridian network. Students will sign a BYOD agreement so that they are clear on expectations for the proper use of technology at school. For more information on Meridian’s Acceptable Use Policy for Technology, please refer to pages 51 and 52 of the Parent/Student Handbook.

How will students have access to the Internet while at school?

Students will log into the Meridian BYOD wireless network using their student email credentials. More information about connecting to the network can be found can be found here.
