IB and Art

What makes an IB school different from another neighborhood school with regard to the visual arts? In an IB school we strive to build CONNECTIONS to the regular curriculum and the six planners that the teachers do per grade level. It is important that the students are exposed to a broad range of experiences that connect to the visual arts such as collage, illustration, landscape art, drawing, graphic design, painting, printmaking, sculpture, etc. We also strive to connect them with the diversity of artists through the study of these persons both locally and globally, now and in the past, and people from different backgrounds. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, to explore their personal interests and develop their own style.

As stated in the Making the PYP Happen, arts in the PYP exemplify learning through inquiry because of the emphasis on, and the nature of, the creative process. The arts provide a unique vehicle to enhance the understanding of the transdisciplinary themes by providing students and teachers with a range of mediums with which to access the units of inquiry.  Arts support the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, the development of conceptual understanding, and the demonstration of positive attitudes, and the taking of action.  At Meridian, we look for ways to infuse the arts and learning in all areas of the curriculum that are relevant to the community of learners.
