2nd Unit of Inquiry: How We Organize Ourselves

Central Idea: 

Our relationships impact ourselves and others.

The Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry will be explored through the lens of music.

 

About the Unit:

This unit aims to introduce students to the different types of voice: Inner, Whisper, Talk, Shout, and Sing including male/female. Students will explore how the different voices we use can impact others. Further development in understanding and identifying musical elements will be nurtured through a variety of tasks. This will forge links with the attributes of humans and aspects of how we are similar and different.

During this unit, the students will learn to recognize and identify the similarities and differences in the types of voice. Students will demonstrate and identify different voices: speaking, singing, whispering, shouting, and voice exploration.They will listen to and analyze pieces of music as well as develop their own singing voice. They will experiment with the range of pitch that their own voices can make.

 

Lesson 1 Objective: To explore different uses of the voice.

Lesson 2 Objective: To develop an understanding of how voices can be used to make sounds. (Using the book Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp!)

Lesson 3 Objective: To analyze and demonstrate how our voice can be used to show pitch.

Lesson 4 Objective: To create voice paths using pitch and dynamics.

Lesson 5 Objective: To learn and create melodies using 3 Solfege hand signals through singing.

Lesson 6 & 7 Objective: To rehearse, perform and analyze each performance.

About the Unit:

This unit aims to introduce students to the community of the music elements. These are the building blocks of every piece of music. Students will explore a variety of sounds and how they can be used expressively to show different emotions and effects. Several of the musical elements will be introduced to the students through exploration using DR P SMITH which is an acronym for dynamics, rhythm, pitch, sound, melody, instruments, tempo, timbre, texture, and harmony.

The students will learn to recognize and demonstrate dynamics, rhythm, pitch, and tempo during this unit. They explore and experiment with sounds to represent different effects and emotions through various activities, from rhythmic games to songs.

 

Lesson 1 Objective: To explore musical sounds and identify different dynamics.

Lesson 2 Objective: To explore beat and identify it in pieces of music.

Lesson 3 Objective: To analyze the difference between beat and rhythm.

Lesson 4 Objective: To analyze pitch and identify the pitch heard.

Lesson 5 Objective: To identify and analyze tempo.

Lesson 6 Objective: To explore timbre and the types of sounds used for music.

Lesson 7 & 8 Objective: To compose a short rhythm and perform using dynamics.
