2nd Unit of Inquiry: Where We Are in Place and Time

The Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry will be explored through the lens of music.

 

About the Unit:

This unit aims to support the inquiry surrounding exploration and migration from the lends of music. Students will explore (Inquirer) how music has been impacted by exploration and also the forced migration of Africans that led to Blues music. The students will gain an understanding of the impact a change in environment has on genres of music through Spirituals and Blues music. They will compose music based on 20th Century experimentation, in particular Aleatoric Music (music by chance) using a dice.

During this unit, students will learn how to identify Major and Minor chords and how they are built. They will analyze the structure of Blues lyrics and which chords male up the 12-Bar Blues.  Students will be able to perform the 12-bar blues and improvise using the Blues Scale in C.

 

Where the Unit fits:

This unit will build on students’ understanding and appreciation of the world we live in, and the diverse cultural beliefs directly linked to music. They will make connections with how migration can impact both people and the environment. They will have a deeper understanding on how exploration impacts music and how its changed over time. They will learn how to improvise. They will develop skills in music notation, singing, performing, and appraising. They will understand the structure of a chord and be able to build them from the chord name. They will know what the 12 Bar Blues is and the structure of Blues Songs.

Lesson 1 Objective: To explore and create a piece of Aleatoric music.

Lesson 2 Objective: To create and perform a piece of Aleatoric music.

Lesson 3 Objective: To analyze the development of Blues from Spirituals.

Lesson 4 Objective: To analyze the chord structure of the 12 Bar Blues.

Lessons 5 & 6 Objective: To learn the Blues scale in C and experiment with Improvisation.

Lesson 7 Objective: To perform the 12-Bar Blues and improvise using the Blues Scale in C.

The Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry will be explored through the lens of music.

 

About the Unit:

The unit will develop students’ understanding and knowledge of the characteristics (music elements) that are used and those that reflect the culture in music. Students will analyze music to see how the music elements shape and impact the music, causing changes in both the architecture and sound. Students will explore the music of Texas and the diversity there is within the state. Students will gain broader exposure to music from diverse cultures and how the music can be fused together to represent communities.

Students will explore the relationship music has with how an individual identifies. This will learn traditional Native American rhythms. They will also learn and perform a standard Country Line Dance. Students will sing Texas Our Texas (State Song) and at least one Spiritual. Students will strengthen their knowledge and application of music terminology when listening to and analyzing music.

Lesson 3 Objective: To understand the indigenous population of Texas – Native Americans and perform a traditional rhythm

Lessons 4 & 5 Objective: To explore and analyze Country music of Texas and learn a Line Dance.

Lesson 6 Objective: To understand fusion and its impact on Tejano.

Lesson 7 Objective: To analyze the Spirituals and learn their significance and power.

Lesson 8 Objective: To analyze Follow the Drinking Gourd and learn it.
