2nd Unit of Inquiry: How The World Works

Central Idea:

Utilizing energy can bring change.

Lines of Inquiry:

* Forms of energy

* Connections between change and energy

* Innovation of tools and ideas

The Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry will be explored through the lens of music.

About the Unit:

Students will explore energy related to music. They will investigate the different types and ways that music uses energy. Students will develop an understanding of the different ways that instruments make sound. They will learn about the components of sound waves to better understand how sound is produced.

During this unit students will explore the connection between changing pitch and dynamics with the amount of energy used. This will be explored using an Oscillator, Spectogram, Harmonics, Voice Spinner (Chrome Lab - https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Experiments) The relationship between the frequency and math will be discovered. The students will compose either a 2-bar or 4-bar melody incorporating Half notes, Quarter notes and Eighth notes and applying dynamics. The students will reflect on how the pitch and dynamics impact the shape of the sound waves.

Lesson Outlines:

Lesson 1 Objective: To explore and analyze the ways energy can be used in music.

Lesson 2 Objective: To identify and understand the components of a sound wave.

Lesson 3 Objective: To explore and analyze the impact of Pitch on a Sound Wave.

Lesson 4 & 5 Objective: To compose a 2-bar or 4-bar melodic phrase.

Lesson 6 Objective: To analyze the impact of the melody on the shape of the sound waves.

Lesson 7 Objective: To perform their compositions and reflect on the success.

Key Concepts – Form, Change; Responsibility

Related Concepts – Sound, Sound energy, pitch, dynamics

1st Unit of Inquiry: How We Express Ourselves

Central Idea:

Life experiences influence expression.

Lines of Inquiry:

* Analyzing mediums

* Influences on expression

* Interpreting personal voice

The Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry will be explored through the lens of music.

About the Unit:

Students will explore the relationship of the different musical elements including tonality to the expressive qualities and impact on the listener. They will explore the music components that reflect culture. The tonalities Major and Minor will be introduced allowing students to understand and hear the difference between them. Students will compose an 8-beat motif using either C Major or C Minor.

During this unit, students will develop their listening and analysis skills in identifying the music elements used during a piece that creates a specific expression. Students will gain a deeper understanding of music terminology, correctly using the technical terms to describe the music they hear. Students will understand the way music impacts them and be able express personal preferences.

Lesson Outlines:

Lesson 1 Objective: To analyze two contrasting pieces of music and understand the impact of the musical elements.

Lesson 2 Objective: To explore and analyze the Major Scale.

Lesson 3 Objective: To analyze the Minor Scale and how it differs from the Major Scale (performing both).

Lesson 4 Objective: To evaluate the impact of situations on expression and create a simple motif.

Lesson 5 & 6 Objective: To compose an 8-beat motif.

Lesson 7 & 8 Objective: To perform the 8-beat motif and self-reflect on the end composition.

Key Concepts – Function; Connection; Perspective

Related Concepts – Tonality, Scales, Patterns, Expression
