New voter registration deadline: Tomorrow!

Local elections are important, because the decisions made by local elected officials have a great impact on our daily lives. You can encourage your students to see the power of voting close-up! Talk about the importance of voting in our local elections, and take your kids along when you go vote during Early Voting, which goes from April 22 to May 4 (visit Wilcotx.gov/elections for details). Meridian supports student civic engagement. We offer regular opportunities to voter-educate your student and register those eligible to be ready for this fall's election and elections beyond. Studies show that students who are encouraged to vote from eligibility on become lifetime voters! To vote in the upcoming May election, eligible voters must be registered by April 4.

It's time to Adopt a Senior!

Reminder: Eclipse Day Survey and FAQs

Please submit this form by today, March 27

Meridian will have school the day of the eclipse, April 8. We’ve planned an amazing day for our students to take part in this exciting event!  We’ll share safe eclipse viewing practices with our students, and we need your help reinforcing the lesson. Please talk to your students about safe eclipse viewing. Eclipse shirts will arrive next week for those who have ordered.

To help us plan for numbers and outside space to view the event, please complete this short form if you have not already done so (we’ve had more than 1,000 responses!). If you have children in multiple grades, please complete one form for each child.

Here are answers to some of the questions you’ve shared so far:

Can my student bring their own glasses?

If you purchased glasses that you prefer your child to wear, they may bring them. Please look at this webpage to make sure they are high quality. There are many cheap, inferior products out there.

What glasses has Meridian ordered?

  • Meridian has purchased high-quality eclipse glasses from American Paper Optics. These glasses are CE certified and meet ISO standards 12312-2. Staff members tested these exact glasses during the October eclipse (and have additionally tested the current batch out after they arrived).
  • These glasses have been tested to fit all sizes; they work over eyeglasses.
  • To accommodate different needs, we also have eclipse viewers donated by the Houston Museum of Natural Science. These are also CE certified and meet ISO standards.

It's time to Adopt a Senior!

A wonderful Meridian tradition in pay-it-forward fashion, "Adopt a Senior" gives the entire Meridian community the chance to celebrate the K-12 continuum and support our class of 2024 seniors in their last few weeks of high school  –  right when they need it most. It’s as simple as sending a note of encouragement or treating them with their favorite snack or a gift card between May 1-17. Please sign up to Adopt a Senior by April 24.

Open 24-25 Board Position

Meridian has an opening for a community member (non-parent) to join the Board of Directors. Please help us spread the word!

Our current Board member, Sofia O’Malley, is rotating off of the board after serving for the maximum of six consecutive years as a strong and supportive member. This opens a position for a new member to join with the first meeting of the new term scheduled for July.

Our bylaws call for a total of seven members, one of which is to be a parent of a Meridian student. The parent position is filled by Tejal Bhalani. So this open position must be filled by a community member.

Should you know someone who is looking for a volunteer opportunity to serve as a board member, please contact [email protected] and/or share this Board Candidate Packet and Application. Applications are due by April 5.

Arts & Science Showcase to include Planetarium, rock painting, rocket science, and more!

CDC updated and simplified COVID-19 recommendations

Meridian has been keeping up with the latest from the CDC guidelines in regards to COVID-19. The CDC recently dropped the quarantine guidelines, so we will no longer require students or staff to quarantine if they test positive for the virus.

As with any illness, students and staff should not return to the school until they are fever free for 24+ hours, without medication on board and are feeling much better.

COVID-19 has been causing less severe illness and hospitalizations have decreased as most people are vaccinated and/or have been exposed to the virus, creating immunity to the virus.

What do I do if my student tests positive for COVID-19 or a respiratory virus?

  • If your student will be absent, report the absence via email.
  • As with any absence, parents and guardians may contact their student’s teachers to pick up homework for their student.

Students and staff members who have tested positive for COVID-19 or another respiratory virus may return to school once these measures have been met:

  • They are 24 hours fever-free (temp of 100𐩑 F or higher) without using fever-reducing medication
  • Improved symptoms (cough, difficulty breathing, etc.)
  • Keep in mind that you may still be able to spread the virus that made you sick, even if you are feeling better. Take added precaution over the next 5 days after you return, such as wearing a mask, social distancing, washing hands, etc.

CDC Press Release: CDC updates and simplifies respiratory virus recommendations. Read on for more information from the CDC on how to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses.

Important attendance reminder

Meridian asks for your help in reducing avoidable (non-illness/emergency) absences.

Attendance is counted daily at 9:30 a.m. If students are not in their class at 9:30 a.m., they will be counted absent.  If your child is absent, we will not receive vital funding.

We understand that students need to take absences for illness and other reasons, and that routine appointments may not always be available after the school day ends. We ask for your help in reducing any avoidable absences. When possible, please schedule routine medical and dental appointments after 9:30 a.m., so that your student is counted for the day's attendance.

IB Visit and Continuum Evaluation

Every five years, IB schools go through an evaluation process – beginning with a self-study to identify strengths and areas for improvement and culminating with a visit from other IB educators to give feedback on our practices. This evaluation cycle is Meridian’s first as a continuum school – that means all three programs have worked together to analyze our practices. Read on to learn more.

Fun Meridian college acceptance fact?

Did you know that more than 10% of Meridian graduates have enrolled in UT since the first senior class graduated in 2016? Of the 375 Meridian graduates between 2016 and 2022 (the latest year for which we have data), 41 students have attended UT Austin beginning in their freshman year. These students do not account for those who were accepted but chose to attend another school (like Harvard, Stanford, U of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt, etc.)

At more than 10%, Meridian graduates exceed the top 6% automatic admission rate of UT. Meridian High School students benefit from qualities unique to a small International Baccalaureate High School program where your teachers and administrators not only know your name, but are available before and after school to assist, and they write personal letters of recommendations for students who need that personal touch. With 1.5 counselors dedicated to just over 250 students, your student can receive the individualized attention that isn’t always available in traditional high schools.

They have been coordinating with Texas charter school networks for the past several years to expand pro-charter grassroots advocacy capacity across the state. They are working to ensure that those who have benefited most from charter schools have the opportunity to share their experiences with legislators and make their voices heard.

Morning Carline Update

blockFor student safety reasons, beginning Nov. 13, from 7:20 a.m. to 8 a.m., the entrance to Meridian Way off of the I-35 access road will be blocked. Vehicles will still be able to exit to the access road but no traffic will be allowed to enter during that time.

While this has not been an entrance to the carline in the mornings, there has been an increase in the number of vehicles parking and blocking traffic flow, as well as students and parents walking across the busy street without using crosswalks. Student safety is paramount; please follow the carline maps and share with anyone dropping off or picking up your child.

Thank you for helping to keep Meridian safe.

Tip for receiving urgent school-wide messages

Meridian School uses CatapultConnect to communicate with families for emergencies and important information. You should have already received a few text messages over the past few weeks. The number is “96064.” It’s come to our attention that these messages may be automatically sent to spam on certain phones.

We recommend that you add “96064” as a contact in your phone to prevent future messages from going to spam. If you have not received any messages since the beginning of the year, check your phone’s spam folder. Consider naming the contact “Meridian Urgent News” or “Catapult Emergency” so that you immediately recognize the number.
