Then, it’s time for the fun! May 14, students in grades K-8 get to join in on the Glow Run in the Mays gym to fulfill those pledges! The more funds we have, the more improvements we can make! All students will get to participate regardless of pledges.

FROM THE PRINCIPALcrystal

No school for students this Friday.

This Sunday is San Jacinto Day! Ask your students if they recall the details of the Battle of San Jacinto. It was the final battle of the Texas Revolution and ultimately led to Texas’ independence from Mexico.

Please join us Thursday for our MYP grading night! There is a link below where you can provide us with your questions regarding standards based grading. Speaking of grades, Progress Report grades have been updated in Skyward as of Monday, April 15. Have your student check their grades and speak with their teacher if they need help.

Just a reminder for 6-8 grade parents: you are able to view course requests; however, students in grades 6 do not have elective options beyond choosing their foreign language and music class in 6th grade. Grades 7 and 8 do not have elective options, as they continue with their chosen foreign language.

Attention 10th graders: Need $$$ for your Senior Trip and/or IB exams?

Read this RS3 Testimonial from parent, Deb Robison:

"When we first heard about RS3 fundraising, it seemed like not only a great way to earn money for our senior's IB exams, but it was also a great way for my teen to learn job skills and build her resume. The bonus was doing something fun with her which was a great bonding experience for us. We thought the two of us would have to work five shifts to meet our earning goal of $750, but much to our surprise we earned $1200 in only three shifts because of how the payout bonuses work. Our Meridian RS3 Coordinators, Brian and Anne Hankey, do a fantastic job with all of the organization and communications--and they skillfully advocate to make sure we have full teams working the events so that we can get the bonus earnings. Since my student is a senior, we were only aiming to earn $750 for the IB Exams. The extra money will go to my freshman student to start her Senior Trip fund."

FROM THE PRINCIPALcrystal

Hello amazing MYP families,

Learning a foreign language includes so much more than vocabulary! We strive for our students to have a cultural understanding of the languages they are acquiring. Our French students celebrated Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) yesterday. We all enjoyed the Mardi Gras parade. The students made amazing floats and masks for this event. Thank you Madame Shebaro, Madame Gentillet, and Madame Piña for organizing this amazing event and for sharing this cultural experience with our students and learning community.

Mark your calendars! Please join us Sunday, March 3 for our 8th grade art exhibit, orchestral performance, and book fair at Lark & Owl bookstore in Georgetown. Ms. Meissner has worked with the 8th grade students to curate an exhibition of their best work from this school year. Ms. Dacheff has prepared several music pieces that will be performed by students during the event. A percentage of all sales will go back to Meridian and will be used to purchase more books for our secondary libraries.

Conversations for parents and students

conversationsWe have had a dramatic increase in students using derogatory and racially charged language. We have held small group discussions in English classes reviewing the negative implications of this kind of language. Students are continuing to use racial slurs with one another. We ask that you please review with your student the type of language that is appropriate for a school setting. As a reminder, the initial consequence for a racial slur or derogatory language is a day of in school suspension, a written essay on the specific slur used, and participation in a restorative session with all students involved in the incident. Read on for helpful information from Boston’s Children’s Hospital to help guide your conversation.

Nurse’s note: Important immunization requirements

Your School Health Team is planning ahead for the 24-25 school year! As a Texas State requirement, Students must receive a Meningococcal and updated Tdap vaccination before 7th grade.

Students will not be able to start the school year without proof of receiving these immunizations (or without an up-to-date medical or conscious exemption). Email immunization records to [email protected] or reach out with any questions or concerns. Again, these immunizations are needed prior to the start of the 24-25 school year.

FROM THE PRINCIPALcrystal

Hello amazing MYP families,

I hope everyone is staying warm. I’m excited to see incoming 9th grade and incoming 6th grade families this week. Registration is rolling out for all of our secondary students. We are excited to announce a couple of new courses. Choir and public speaking & research will be electives available to high school students next school year, pending board approval.

Friends of Meridian is looking for parents to help with creating grade level baskets for their silent auction at their International Celebration of Flavors. Please reach out to [email protected] if you are interested in helping.

To have a little fun in this cold weather, we are inviting students to bring a blanket to keep warm this week.

Attention Parents/Guardians of Current 10th Graders

Your students complete the MYP Programme this school year! Next year, they enter the IB Diploma Programme, the academic programme for grades 11-12.

Our current 10th grade students, the Class of 2026, learned all about the IB Diploma Programme and made preliminary course selections for next year during visits from our IB Diploma Programme Coordinator (Mr. Ryder) and our high school counselor (Mr. Manuszak) during their College and Career Readiness class. Learn more about the 11th Grade Course Selection Form.

IB Diploma Program (DP) Information Night

Attention rising juniors and your parents and guardians! Learn what’s in store for your student and how Meridian can meet their educational needs and prepare them for success after graduation. The IB Diploma Programme Information Night talks all about program options that prepare students for college majors and professional careers in Computer Science, Engineering, Medicine, and more! Interested families of current 8th and 9th graders are also welcome!

When: Tuesday, January 23 from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the Mays Café

One-on-one Individual Planning Meetings with the Counselor

In addition to the IB DP Information night, 10th grade students and their parents/guardians are invited to meet one-on-one with our high school counselor, Mr. Manuszak. This is a great opportunity to get individual attention from the counselor and ask questions about course options in the IB Diploma Program.

Pro tips: Sign up for a meeting date on or after January 24 so that you can first attend the IB DP Information Night. And schedule this meeting during a class period when your student can most afford to miss instructional time (for example, you may want to avoid scheduling the meeting during their math class).

Questions about any of the above? Reach out to Mr. Manuszak.

The fall play, Macbeth, was impressive!

The high school cast and crew of The Scottish Play (Macbeth) transformed the black box into a post-apocalyptic war zone. The costumes, lighting, sound, sets, smoke, and props provided the stellar cast with the environment and means to bring murder, deceit, chaos, and total devastation to a spellbound audience. Bravo, Meridian Mechs!

College testing is going digital!

ACT has been offering their college exam in a digital format for several years. This year, the College Board suite of tests (PSAT, SAT, etc) will also phase-in their digital platform. The PSAT/NMSQT will be taken online this fall. By the spring of 2024, the SAT will only be offered online.

Visit the College Board website  to learn more about the Digital PSAT/NMSQT. This website shares how the test works, what students will need to take the exam, and ways your student can prepare for the test. Meridian will register students for the PSAT and students will take the PSAT on school-issued devices. Watch a quick video about the College Board test platform updates.

Increased mandatory disciplinary consequences for vape related offenses

All parents/guardians and students should be aware that HB 114 has increased the minimum consequences for vape related disciplinary offenses effective September 1. The legislation states that a student who “possesses, uses, sells, gives, or delivers to another person an e- cigarette … shall be removed from class and placed in a disciplinary alternative education program."

Meridian does not have a disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) option, so students who commit vape offenses (THC and non-THC related) would be assigned a minimum consequence of 4 - 6 weeks of suspension. The suspension would likely involve an initial period of out-of-school suspension (3 days) followed by a longer period of in-school suspension (ISS) of 17-27 days.

We recommend families watch this educational video about vape products being made to look like school supplies. If you have questions or concerns about this matter, please reach out to your child's assistant principal or principal.

As the story goes, Texas moms got involved in the 1960s when they began teaming up with their daughters to create downright fancy mums … Some clever moms realized they could take their mums to the next level by using artificial flowers and that turned out to be a game changer. They added ribbons, shiny trinkets, lots of bling and even stuffed animals.” - KHOU 11

Did you know …

  • 1936, the first mum was spotted at Baylor

  • The Whatamum - Whataburger made the world’s largest mum, 18 feet long!

  • There a Texas tradition, each region in Texas has their own mum style

  • Why do students in Texas like mums and garters? Because they’re fun!

Become part of the Texas tradition and purchase your mum or garter on MySchoolBucks or by check until Friday, September 15 at 11:59 p.m. Read on to learn how to order your’s and to see what we have planned for Homecoming week; to include a Mum and Garter Making Social. Students may wear their mum or garter Friday, September 29 and to the High School Homecoming Semi Formal.

Morning carline: Thank you for your patience as we work to create solutions for delays in carline. If you have only secondary students and are able to drop your students off after 8 a.m., please do so. Week of August 23, 2023

FROM THE PRINCIPALcrystal

Greetings Families,

Our counselors are starting guidance lessons in classes this week. They are joining specific subjects so they can rotate through their given grade levels to see all of their students. Students will take part in short lessons on social emotional learning. Initially they will focus on what makes a good friend and how to welcome others into their social groups. What a perfect way to start the school year and learn how to invite and welcome our new students into our community. To learn more about our counselors, read “Meet your counselors” below.

This year, Advisory looks a little different. Advisory will still be before 4th/8th period but will incorporate various themed rotations. Our first rotation that our grade level teams are incorporating is a community day. Once a week students will participate in an activity that promotes community and builds culture across the class and grade level.

Important update: DP Music Program at Meridian

Interest in DP Music has been low over the last few years. We did not offer DPY1 Music last school year, 2022-2023. Seeing that interest was still low for 2023-2024, we have made the hard decision to discontinue DP Music as part of the IB Diploma Program.

It is possible that DP Music may come back in the future, but it will take time to rebuild the program. Music continues to be a strong course offering in MYP (6-10) and it is an elective for DP (11-12).

Action Requested: If your student chose to take music this year in anticipation of it leading to IB Diploma Program Music, you should contact your counselor to talk through a possible schedule change. DP Theatre and DP Visual Arts are thriving programs in the DP and should be considered as alternatives to DP Music.  Once they reach the DP in 11th grade, students may also choose to drop their fine art and double up in the DP Sciences. Please reach out to your counselor with questions about this:

Grade 9 Counselor: Andy Harvey

Grade 10 Counselor: Nick Manuszak

Hot weather and Secondary PE

We follow the district weather watch index for physical activity during times of weather warnings. We take the temperature and the humidity into consideration when determining if safe conditions are present for physical activity. Our PE coaches have been walking students around the building for laps in lieu of running. Students are given opportunities to get water and take breaks. Please tell your student that if they are not feeling well or something doesn't feel right to reach out to any staff member so that we can ensure their health and safety during this extreme weather.

MYP Grading overview and upcoming feedback opportunity

At Meridian, we strive to provide an MYP program that meets the principles of an International Baccalaureate (IB) education while fulfilling the rigor of Texas standards. We began the process of adopting a Standards Based Grading (SBG) System in 2019. Covid slowed our progress; however, we have been moving forward since last year with the goal of full implementation by 2024-2025. Before moving forward, we are seeking feedback from our families.

The MYP program uses a 1-8 scale rubric that is provided by IB. We have developed a conversion chart so that each step of the rubric corresponds with a percentage on a traditional 100 point scale. We will share more information in upcoming newsletters and in the first Principal’s coffee, followed by a survey to our families so that you may share your thoughts, concerns and preferences.

FROM THE PRINCIPALcrystal

Hello fabulous families,

The school year has begun! Don’t forget to sign up for After School 6-12 if your student needs to wait for you after school. This year, to ensure our student’s safety, you will no longer be able to call or text your student to have them dismissed from After School 6-12. Please look at the After School pick up instructions. If you are not using Pikmykid to pick up your child from After School 6-12, then you will need to come in and sign them out.

First week reminders:

  • 6th graders do not need to bring their instruments for the first two weeks.
  • 6th and 7th grade students will not have their Chromebooks assigned until the second full week of school.

Attention: Car tags that have not been picked up go home with students on Thursday, August 10. Please make sure your student is able to identify your car so that you do not have to park during car line.

Meet your Principal

Crystal Lane, MYP Principal (6-10)

I joined Meridian in 2019 as an Assistant Principal in the Middle Years Program. I transitioned into the Middle School Principal position and last year into the MYP Principal position. I have enjoyed the challenges that have been extended to me in addition to the opportunity to work at the same school that my children attend. My oldest will be a senior this year!

My teaching experiences have covered multiple subjects and across multiple states. I have extensive experience working with special populations including special education, English Language Learners, and the Gifted and Talented. I never pass up on an opportunity to lead training and present to my colleagues.

I graduated from The University of Redlands with a BA in International Relations and a MA in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on culture and diversity. I am excited to begin my doctoral studies at Texas Woman’s University this fall.

School Supplies

Don’t forget to purchase school supplies and get your polo shirts embroidered for Mondays. We will not utilize the lockers this year – please keep this in mind as you shop. Check out supply lists for grades 6-8 and 9-10.

We highly encourage families to label all of their students’ items. Mabel's Labels makes it easy and they give 20% back to our school if you search and select Meridian School before shopping.

Uniforms

Review the Uniform Guide before shopping. Don't forget to get a few polos embroidered with the Lion Logo to wear on Mondays (and the rest of the week if desired). 6th-8th graders may wear red embroidered polos and 9th-10th graders have a choice of red or black.

New: blue jeans are allowed Monday – Friday! You are invited to reach out to your Assistant Principals with any questions.

Uniform Exchange: If you wish to shop at the Uniform exchange, it will take place on Saturday, July 29 from 10 a.m. - noon. Enjoy gently worn uniform pieces for $2 each, including coats and jackets!

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

We ask that students in grades 8-12 bring their own computer/chromebook. Grades 6-7 are also allowed to bring their own device this year. We recognize that students prefer the consistency of using the same device. We will have chromebooks available for 6th-7th graders in need. Read more about BYOD here.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding BYOD, please contact your student’s Assistant Principal, Matthew Castaneda (6-7) or Shachon Leaf (8-10).
