Meridian K-8 Glow Run: Register and pledge today!

Meridian has partnered with Booster to help raise $35,000 for improvements to the primary outdoor spaces and Mays Aux Gym.

Want to help make our outdoor spaces better? Register your students and make a pledge/share! Here’s how you can help Meridian reach our goal:

  • You can pledge per minute run or make a flat donation.
  • Does your company match gifts? You can double your donation!
  • Share your student’s site with friends and family – this is a great opportunity for out-of-town friends and family to support your student!

Then, it’s time for the fun! May 14, students in grades K-8 get to join in on the Glow Run in the Mays gym to fulfill those pledges! The more funds we have, the more improvements we can make! All students will get to participate regardless of pledges.

IB Initiative: The Transdisciplinary Theme of Sharing the Planet

Who We Are  •  Where We Are in Place and Time  •  How We Express Ourselves

How the World Works  •  How We Organize Ourselves  •  Sharing the Planet

Sharing the Planet is an inquiry into the rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.

This theme is a great connection to Earth Day, which was Monday, and Arbor Day which will be Friday. We only have one Earth, so we must learn how to share it well.

At Meridian, all grades except Kindergarten study the theme of Sharing the Planet through the following central ideas:

  • 1st Grade - Living things depend on each other and the environment.
  • 2nd Grade - Awareness of resource imbalance can lead to action.
  • 3rd Grade - Understanding how systems work allows us to make meaningful contributions to our world.
  • 4th Grade - Values and passions drive human interactions.
  • 5th Grade - Interdependence builds communities.

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflective

Where We Are in Place and Time is an inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, exploration, and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.

In summary, this theme focuses on the events and places that affect our lives. That includes events that have happened to us personally and events that came before we were born but that have an influence on our lives today. It also means learning about places we’ve been, places we would like to visit and how actions in another part of the world can impact another place.

At Meridian, all grades except Kindergarten study the theme of Where We Are in Place and Time through the following central ideas:

  • 1st Grade - Representations help us understand a complex world.
  • 2nd Grade - Innovations pave the way to where we are today.
  • 3rd Grade - Adaptations alter environmental interactions.
  • 4th Grade - Exploration can present challenges and opportunities.
  • 5th Grade - Forces inspire transformation.

IB Initiative: The Transdisciplinary Theme of How We Organize Ourselves

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflective

The Primary Years Programme of the IB is a framework for learning. Schools take the content they are required to teach and embed it into the framework provided by IB. This framework comes in the form of six transdisciplinary themes. Teachers connect their content to the theme where they see it fitting best. These themes, which represent human commonalities, are explored each year so that students’ understanding of the theme grows deeper each year.

How We Organize Ourselves is an inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

Each grade level at Meridian studies the theme of How We Organize Ourselves through the following central ideas:

  • Kindergarten - Communities are organized to meet the needs and wants of their citizens.
  • 1st Grade - Decisions shape our lives and society.
  • 2nd Grade - Structures influence the way communities function.
  • 3rd Grade - The choices we make have local and global consequences.
  • 4th Grade - The structure of a system affects its ability to serve a purpose.
  • 5th Grade - Structures promote healthy coexistence.

IB Initiative: The Transdisciplinary Theme of How We Express Ourselves

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflective

The Primary Years Programme of the IB is a framework for learning. Schools take the content they are required to teach and embed it into the framework provided by IB. This framework comes in the form of six transdisciplinary themes. Teachers connect their content to the theme where they see it fitting best. These themes, which represent human commonalities, are explored each year so that students’ understanding of the theme grows deeper each year.

How we express ourselves is an inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity, and our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Each grade level at Meridian studies the theme of How We Express Ourselves through the following central ideas:

  • Kindergarten - Communication builds knowledge and understanding.
  • 1st Grade - Exploring cultures helps build respect.
  • 2nd Grade - Creative expression helps deepen our understanding of self and others.
  • 3rd Grade - Life experiences drive expression.
  • 4th Grade - Diversity can strengthen community.
  • 5th Grade - 5th Grade’s Exhibition falls under this theme and they are exploring the concept of creativity in their Exhibition projects.

IB Initiative: The Learner Profile Trait of Reflective

This quarter, our IB Initiative each week will focus on one of the learner profile traits.

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflectivereflective

Our last learner profile trait is the trait of being reflective. According to the IB Organization, reflective people thoughtfully consider the world and their own ideas and experience. They work to understand their strengths and weaknesses in order to support their learning and personal development. As you can tell from this definition, an internal reflection always has an external outcome. This week, our students will be learning that reflection can bring inspiration, help us define our beliefs and values, push us to learn from mistakes and struggles, and guide our actions in the future.

Find activities and book ideas on Meridian’s website to extend the discussion of what it means to be reflective at home.

Happy Wednesday!

We are two days away from Spring Break! Please have a safe and wonderful time next week with your family.

As you are coming in for the spring parties on Friday, please stop by our lost and found in the front lobby. There are so many jackets and water bottles in there that once had an owner. Hopefully they can be reunited again. In the future, if you write your student’s name and teacher’s name on the label, they can be returned when they end up lost.

We will see you back on March 18!

It is unsafe to drop them off in areas where they have to walk through moving cars to get to their building. IB Initiative: The Learner Profile Trait of Caring

This quarter, our IB Initiative each week will focus on one of the learner profile traits.

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflectivecaring

From a young age, we start encouraging our students to be kind and caring to one another. Young children are naturally egocentric, and to be caring requires thinking about others, so it is definitely a skill we grow over time.

IB defines the trait of caring as showing empathy, compassion and respect. A caring person has  a commitment to service and acts to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around them. March is Women’s History Month, so this week on the announcements, we are exploring the lives of four women who are great examples of what it means to be caring. A great conversation you can have at home is to ask your child to identify some women in their life who demonstrate the trait of caring and to set a goal for how they themselves can become more caring.

Find activities and book ideas on Meridian’s website to extend the discussion of what it means to be caring at home.

Important: NO student pick up will be allowed between noon and 2 p.m. this day.

April 8 will be a special day in the lives of Central Texans. We are in the path of totality for the upcoming solar eclipse. We want families to be aware that school will be happening on that day, with exciting learning activities related to the sun and the moon for our students.

Here are some important things for families to know:
  • The school has purchased  solar eclipse glasses for students and staff and we will go outside to experience the eclipse.
  • The office will close at noon that day, and our parking lots will be blocked off between noon and 2 p.m. so that students can view the eclipse safely.
  • Important: NO student pick up is allowed between noon and 2 p.m. If you plan to pick your child up early, you will need to do so before noon or wait until after 2 p.m.
  • We expect heavy afternoon traffic along IH-35  and will have staff on campus to wait with students should your arrival be delayed.
Grade level teams will be sending more detailed information about the day to families after spring break.

IB Initiative: The Learner Profile Trait of  Principled

This quarter, our IB Initiative each week will focus on one of the learner profile traits.

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflectiveprincipled

Ask a child what it means to be principled and they will usually say it means doing the right thing even if no one is looking. This is a great foundation to a deeper understanding. According to IB, to be principled is to act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere.

Principled people take responsibility for their actions and their consequences. This week, our exploration of this trait on the announcements will help us see some key components of being principled:

  • Let your principles (your beliefs and values) guide your actions.
  • Do the right thing even if it might bring unwanted consequences.
  • Notice problems in your world and take action to try to solve them.
  • Seek justice and respect for all.
  • Work hard in all you do.
  • Be willing to stand up for what you believe is right.

Happy Wednesday!

Last Wednesday, for Be Sweet to Others Day, each grade level had a wonderful action that our students participated in to make a difference and impact our world.

Our primary staff spent the afternoon making a difference, too! Staff members split into groups to volunteer at a local nursing home and food bank, cleaned up a community member's residence who needed support, beautified our campus, planted flowers and weeded the front beds and butterfly garden, and painted stepping stones and future benches for our kids to sit on. We enjoyed a wonderful day taking action in our community! Check out pictures!

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflectivecomms

According to the IB, balanced people understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives—intellectual, physical, and emotional—to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. They recognize their interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live. This week on the announcements, we are continuing our look at the lives of people who demonstrate the trait of being balanced. In the month of February, we’ve specifically been focusing on lives tied to Black History Month. This week, we are learning from the lives of Muhammad Ali, Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, and Simone Biles to see that people in all walks of life know what it takes to be balanced.

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflectivecomms

According to IB, communicators express themselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. They collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.

Communicators use communication skills, including taking in information through reading, watching and listening and sharing information through speaking, writing and non-verbal means of communication. This week on the announcements we will continue our exploration of people who demonstrate this trait and tie our learning to Black History Month as well by learning about how Abraham Lincoln, Louis Armstrong, Faith Ringgold, Frederick Douglass, and Ralph Bunche all show us different aspects of what it means to be an effective communicator.

IB Initiative: The Learner Profile Trait of Inquirer

This quarter, our IB Initiative each week will focus on one of the learner profile traits.

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  ReflectiveOM

Inquirers nurture their curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. They know how to learn independently and with others. They learn with enthusiasm and sustain their love of learning throughout life.

IB’s definition of the trait of inquirer points us to the approaches to learning that we focus on within all three IB programs. In order to grow as inquirers, students need to learn research and thinking skills to know how to take action on their curiosity. Self-management skills help them learn independently while social skills help them learn with others. Communication skills help them both take in information and share their passion for learning with others.

This week, on the announcements, we are looking at the lives of people like chefs, historians, inventors, and pilots to see the trait of being an inquirer in action. You can help your child be an inquirer at home as well, by nurturing areas where they show curiosity. Famous chefs started with a parent who helped them learn to cook. Inventors often get their start by tinkering with objects to see how they work. What aspect of life is your child curious about and how can you nurture that curiosity at home or in the community?

Find activities and book ideas on Meridian’s website to extend the discussion of what it means to be an inquirer at home.

This quarter, our IB Initiative each week will focus on one of the learner profile traits.

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflective

OMTo connect with International Week at Meridian, we are exploring the learner profile trait of open-minded. According to the IB, to be open-minded means to  critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. Open-minded individuals seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.

This week, on the announcements, we will explore a broad range of people and groups to consider what they can teach us about being open-minded. We will learn that open-minded people and groups:

  • are curious about others and about the world around them.
  • are willing to grow and change as they consider the perspectives of others.
  • have no place for hate or prejudice.
  • see value in other people.

First graders learn about lions

Each year, Founder & CEO Karalei Nunn talks to Meridian first graders about the school and the meaning of our name and logo. This year’s visit happened last week. Check with your first grader to see what they learned about Meridian!

roary“We explored the meanings of the word meridian, how it relates to an imaginary line on the globe, and the symbol of the lion as strong, brave, and importantly a leader of others,” says Ms. Nunn. “We even had a surprise visit from Roary, our Meridian mascot. It is always such a joy to be with your children – their eyes are bright and they are eager to learn and to share their thoughts!”

They engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance. Our exploration of the trait of knowledgeable this week will also show us a few other important pieces of what it means to show this trait:

  • Knowledge gained in childhood can lead us to occupations and passions as adults.
  • We learn both through researching the ideas of others and through our own personal experiences.
  • Knowledgeable people persevere to continue learning no matter the obstacles they face.
  • Knowledgeable people build on the ideas of others.
  • We can learn from mistakes and past events and use this knowledge to make a better future.

Happy Wednesday!

We have so many events in January and are excited to share them with you. International week, The World Parade, and The Festival of Cultures are all coming at the end of the month!

If your child is in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade, we have interims coming up at the end of the month as well. These assessments are very important for us to see how we can better support your student before the state assessment later in the spring. Make sure your student is well rested, has a good breakfast and has a positive start to the day to set them up for success!

The playground will be closed this week on Thursday and Friday. I’m sure the kiddos will be disappointed but we will make recess fun even without it. We will be doing work on the rain garden/playground drainage system to further help with drainage issues before the rainy season arrives.

Have a great week and please remember that tardies are taken after 8:05 a.m. every morning. If our students are on time, they start their day in a positive way!

Reminder: Next Monday, January 15 there is no school in observance of MLK Day.

IB Initiative: The Learner Profile Trait of Risk Taker

Over the next 10 weeks, our IB Initiative each week will focus on one of the learner profile traits.

Inquirers  •  Knowledgeable  •  Thinkers  •  Communicators  •  Principled

Open-Minded  •  Caring  •  Risk-takers  •  Balanced  •  Reflective

These traits are part of all IB programs and help us become internationally-minded individuals. On the announcements each week, we will share about the trait and then examine the lives of individuals past and present who exhibit the trait of the week to see what we can learn from their lives about what it looks like to demonstrate that trait.

To be a risk-taker, according to IB, means:

  • we approach uncertainty with forethought and determination
  • we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies
  • we are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.

risk takerWhat does a risk taker look like? This week, on the announcements, we are looking at the lives of Elon Musk, Steve Irwin, Amelia Earhart, and Martin Luther King, Jr. to see what we can learn about what it looks like to be a risk taker. We will see that risk takers try new things, new ideas, and new ways of doing things. Risk takers might take risks that seem dangerous or that just put them outside their comfort zone. They learn and practice to make risky things possible. They do the right thing even if it’s not the easy thing. And all of the risk-takers we are looking at took risks because they were motivated by growth or change - they wanted to make the world a better place and they took risks to make it happen.

IB Initiative: The Key Concept of Responsibility

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

This week we wrap up our look at the key concepts with the last one: responsibility. Responsibility explores the question, “What are our obligations?” It is our hope that students begin to consider what they should do in response to learning. Specifically, we are connecting this concept back to our exploration of what it means to be an agent of learning. Agency involves voice, choice, and ownership and all of these involve responsibility.

Perspective: Responsibility is a value which connects it to perspective - what an individual, family, or culture considers responsible differs around the world. But like other values, our definition of responsibility drives our actions and our expectations of others.

Rights: Rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. Rights are freedoms - things we can do, while responsibilities are things we should do. We work to help students understand that just because you can do something doesn’t always mean you should do it.

Citizenship: Finally, responsibility is part of citizenship. Citizens learn responsibility by the values of their community and have rights, responsibilities, and agency within their communities.

Over the break and as the new year begins, take time to talk with your child about what your family values when it comes to responsibility.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Reese

Happy Wednesday!

We only have two weeks left until winter break and still so much to do to get grades wrapped up for the nine weeks. We’re also excited by the thought of winter dress up days next week and the upcoming winter parties on December 14. Not to mention that teachers and staff are excited about the traditional ViP Staff Cookie Buffet.

With all these fun activities please don’t forget that Wednesday, December 13 is a full day of school and that there will be no Triple A or After School December 14. Keep checking the newsletters, Facebook, and the events calendar to keep up with all these dates.

Important Primary Carline Reminders

Early Green Line Reminder – If your child is able to exit your vehicle without assistance, you are welcome to use the Early Green Lane option, which runs from 7:20 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Students walk to the cafeteria and wait until the school opens at 7:30 a.m. to go to their classrooms or eat breakfast.

Safety – Thank you for working with us to drop off students at the designated zones during carline, instead of parking and having your children walk on their own across the parking lot. By using carline, you help the process run smoothly, quickly, and most importantly, safely.

Independence – Our youngest students are quickly gaining independence and confidence. You can help them gain confidence in carline by teaching them how to quickly get bags/backpacks and exit vehicles on their own. This also helps keep carline moving faster!

Help stock our health clinics

Our health clinics serve all our students grades K-12. Occasionally they need help restocking supplies that our students might need. Check out their list to see how you can help. If you order from their Amazon wish list please have items shipped to you and have your student drop items off at either the primary/high school or middle school clinics.

Uniform needsUniforms

We have an immediate need for boys and girls size 4t-10 bottoms (pants, jeans, shorts, skirts, etc). The clinics use items from the uniform exchange closet but we have run out. If you have new or gently used pieces, consider donating them and help us restock the uniform exchange closet.

Thank you for supporting our clinics. Questions? Email [email protected].

Thank you for supporting the Book Fair

Message from: Ms. Chapman, PYP Media Specialist TeacherTYBF

Thank you for all of your support for the Primary Book Fair! Our student/family shoppers and wonderful volunteers, made the book fair a huge success! We were able to buy almost $600 worth of books from the book fair for the Primary Library and classroom teachers. We will receive more rewards once all of the final totals are submitted to Scholastic!

If you did not get to shop at school or your child still had money left on an eWallet, you can still visit our online book fair until Sunday, December 10. Our school still earns rewards for online shopping and all orders of books that are more than $25 can ship free to your home!

If your child still has money left in an eWallet after December 10, the person who created the eWallet will receive an email with the leftover amount credited to a digital gift card. This gift card can be used online at scholastic.com or can be saved to create an eWallet for our Spring Book Fair.

IB Initiative: The Key Concept of Perspective

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

This week, we are exploring the key concept of perspective. This concept explores the question, “What are the points of view?” When we explore perspective, we learn that:

  • everyone has a perspective
  • perspective is influenced by a variety of factors
  • we have to respect the perspective of others
  • our perspective can change when we are open-minded

Perspectives come on a scale from simple opinions to beliefs to convictions. We try to help students understand that everyone has different perspectives and that’s okay. Our perspectives are influenced by many factors, including authority figures and culture as we are younger, and personal experience and society as we age. Your perspective can change based on these factors as well.

Reflecting on our opinions, beliefs, and values and why we hold them either strengthens those perspectives or pushes us to change them. Learning about someone else’s perspective that is different than yours shouldn’t feel threatening. You don’t have to change your perspective to match someone else, but you do have to be respectful of the perspective of others.

Reese

Welcome back!

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! We are excited about our book fair this week. There is more information about it below.

Also, please remember to send a jacket with your student each day as the days have gotten so much cooler. Make sure if they have a jacket they are wearing in the classroom, it is allowable per our dress code. Take a look at the Uniform Guide to see what’s okay to wear.

It will also help to put your child’s name and teacher’s name on the jacket’s tag. If we know who the item belongs to, it can be returned to them and doesn’t end up as a long term resident in our lost and found. Mabel's Labels is one of our community partners and they make labels for clothes and other school items. Select Meridian School on their fundraiser page; they give back to the school.

All items left in lost and found at the end of the semester will be donated.

IB Initiative: The Key Concept of Connection

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

This week we are learning about the key concept of Connection. Connection is just like it sounds - finding connections between people, places, things, and ideas. IB defines Connection as recognizing that we live in a world of interacting systems in which the actions of any individual element affect others.

Where we find connections:

  • We see this in the relationships we are part of, whether they are acquaintances, friends, or family - we are connected.
  • In school, students learn about relationships between letters and sounds, between numbers, between living things, and more as they study the content for each grade level.
  • Two other concepts involved in connection are interdependence and systems. When two people or other living things are connected, they may reach a level of interdependence, where they rely on each other to meet their needs.

Our 5th graders are kicking off a new unit this week with the central idea “Interdependence builds communities.” They will be exploring the key concept of Connection throughout this unit. Systems are groups of elements that function together as one whole. There are systems throughout our world, both natural and man-made. These connections are unique because the system doesn’t function without all the connecting elements.

You can bring the key concept of connection into conversations at home as well. Check out this article for thoughts about helping your child make connections.

IB Initiative: The Key Concept of Causation

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

This week we are learning about the key concept of Causation. This key concept focuses on why something is the way it is. I’m sure you’ve experienced your child asking you why about just about everything. We ask why because we have an innate desire to understand more fully and that’s the first thing we usually wonder. Check out this great article explaining this and giving suggestions on how to respond.

This week, specifically on the announcements, we are connecting Causation with the other three key concepts we’ve explored. Why is the Form the way it is? Why does it Function the way it does? Why does it Change? Asking “why” takes our observations of Form, Function, and Change to a deeper level.

To wrap up our look at Causation, we will also discuss the relationship between cause and effect and how our actions have consequences (which is also cause and effect). Our challenge to the kids on Friday will be to think about the consequence, result, or effect they want and to take action to bring that thing about. Hopefully they can put that into action at home with you over Thanksgiving Break!

Happy Wednesday!

Can you believe we are a week and a half  away from Thanksgiving Break?

As the weather gets cooler, the students are going to need a jacket for outside recess. If this jacket is not within the school dress code, they will have to take it off in the classroom and hallways. A light jacket or sweater that meets the requirements for the dress code would be great to have for indoor wear for students who get cold easily.

Take a look at the Uniform Guide to see what’s okay to wear. Also, if your student is missing their outerwear or jacket, our lost and found has quite the collection. Parents may come in and look if their student is having a hard time finding their lost item.

I can’t wait to see everyone for the upcoming showcases for each grade level. Your students have been working hard to get ready for these events. Don’t forget to RSVP and see you then!

Diwali is this Sunday, November 12, the Hindu festival of light. Please join us in celebrating Diwali by dressing in your traditional sarees, kurtis, salwar kameez, and Anarkali suits this Friday.

IB Initiative: The Key Concept of Change

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

This week, we are exploring the key concept of change. We can see change in many aspects of life. This week, however, we are focusing on how the form and function of something can change.

Changes in Form

Form changes in observable ways. The properties of an object can change on their own or through human efforts. Specifically, change in form often happens in cycles (like animal life cycles) or over time (like changes in technology).

Changes in Function

Last week we saw that function involves purpose and behavior. We can see change happen in both of these. When we use something for a purpose other than its original purpose, we are repurposing or changing its purpose. This is seen in the sustainable movement of upcycling - taking what would be trash and turning it into something usable or beautiful. Behavior can change as well and when it does, there is often a reason behind the change, for example, when your child is “hangry.”

We explore change in many of our units of inquiry, as there are many other concepts aligned to change such as growth, cycles, and adaptation.

IB Initiative: The Key Concept of Function

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

Function explores the question, “How does it work?” It begins with identifying the purpose or role of something and then identifying the patterns of behavior that make it work. Systems that we use have patterns also which we usually call processes. These processes are how the system works. Science exploration is a great place to explore function.

Looking at how nature works all on its own or how man-made inventions work can help us better understand the world in which we live. Also, each family establishes their own procedures for doing things at home.

As a connection this week, you can talk with your child about how things work at your home. What systems are in place to ensure everyone is included, safe, and valued at your home?

Happy Wednesday!

We had a wonderful turnout for the Trunk-or-Treat on Friday! Thank you for joining us! This week is Red Ribbon Week and we hope our students have some fun dressing up while learning the meaning behind this important message. Check out some of our helpful Red Ribbon Week parent/guardian resources.

Starting this week, our counselors begin lessons on another very important message. They will begin discussions over bullying, emotional wellness, and building empathy and kindness

We have seen a rise in students “roasting,” using racial slurs, and overall harsh words toward others in certain grade levels. This is not acceptable and we need your help. You can read  a more detailed description of their lessons and how you can continue the conversation at home.

IB Initiative: Concepts

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) has seven concepts they consider key concepts because they offer depth and breadth across all content areas. We’ll explore each of these concepts for a week between now and winter break, beginning with FORM.

FORM explores the question, “What is it like?”

  • To explore FORM is to explore the identifiable properties of an object or topic.
  • When we explore two objects or topics, we will begin to see similarities and differences. Comparing the traits of two or more things is part of exploring FORM.
  • As we notice the forms of objects and topics, we begin to notice patterns: traits that are true of all or most.

As part of the announcements this week, we’re exploring this idea by looking at the traits of a pencil, comparing different pencils and noticing patterns of things that are true of all or most pencils. You could do this at home too. One great place to observe is outside. Nature gives us many things to observe - rocks, plants, birds - all have observable properties, similarities and differences, and patterns.

IB Initiative: Approaches to Learning

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we will share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

This week, we are exploring each of the 5 Approaches to Learning (ATL) and thinking about how we use them as agents of learning. The ATL are sets of skills that are applicable to all aspects of life. The 5 Approaches to Learning include:

  • Thinking Skills - critical thinking, creative thinking, information transfer, and reflection/metacognition
  • Communication Skills - information exchange, literacy, ICT (information-communication technologies)
  • Social Skills - positive interpersonal relationships and collaboration, social-emotional intelligence
  • Self-management Skills - Organization and states of mind
  • Research Skills - information literacy, media literacy, ethical use of media/information

We work on building these skills in our classes. You will find an update from your child’s teacher on how your child is demonstrating these skills at an age appropriate level in the homeroom section of our report cards (coming after fall break). Want to support the building of the ATL skills at home? Check out these ATL Challenge cards designed by a Toddle Educator.

Happy Wednesday!

We had a great Primary Principal’s Coffee last week. Thank you to Ms. Knight, Ms. Garcia, and Ms. Lieurance for presenting when I couldn’t! If you didn’t get a chance to come check out the slides to see what we talked about.

The weather Sunday evening has given us quite a bit of mess to clean up. I wanted to give a shout out to all of our volunteers who helped with cleanup on Monday – you all were amazing! We still have some cleanup and drying out of areas in the works. Some classrooms will be displaced for a few days while this takes place. Emails from teachers/teams went out if this directly affected your child. Hopefully by next week, we will be back to some sort of normalcy. We can’t wait!

IB Initiative: Action

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we will share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

This week, we are exploring how and why agents of learning take action. There are many sources of inspiration for action. We can be inspired to share new knowledge, to change an emotion we are feeling, or to work to meet a goal. The people around us can inspire us to take action as well, to help a friend in need, to join a cause that a friend is passionate about, or work to build a relationship.

Albert Bandura is a social psychologist who has spent much of his life focused on agency. He says,

  • “To be an agent is to intentionally make things happen by what we do.
  • To know we can act without seeking permission.
  • To want to act when no one is watching or directing.
  • To seek help when we know something must be done by someone with the capability.
  • To find your tribe to do something together- many hands make light work“ (Bandura, 1997; Harre & Gillet, 1994).

Encourage your child to find ways to take action - both small and large. Remember action is a verb - you can prompt your child with these guiding questions.

IB Initiative: Hispanic Heritage Month and Celebrate Freedom Week

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we will share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.

This week, we are celebrating big! Hispanic Heritage Month kicked off on Friday, September 15, so this week on the announcements, we are learning about why and how people celebrate this month. We will also be learning about aspects of Hispanic culture including Latin music styles, celebrations, and the national dishes of Latin countries.

agent of learning

This week is also Celebrate Freedom Week. Each year, during the week that includes September 17 (Constitution Day), Texas schools honor Celebrate Freedom Week to highlight the values and ideals on which the United States was founded.

This week, we are tying some of the concepts or big ideas that anchor our founding documents to how those concepts are lived out at school. The concepts we will be exploring include freedom, truth, purpose, function, and rights. Each day we will connect back to our exploration of agency from last week to see how these concepts are part of what it means to be an agent of learning.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Reese

Happy Wednesday for this short week!

I hope you had a restful four day weekend with your child (ren)! If you are new to Meridian, we are offering a special Principal’s Coffee for new families this Thursday (tomorrow). During our time together we will go over some of the basics of IB and PYP so you will be more “in the know” of the program here at Meridian.

Important carline reminders

I also want to ask that parents refrain from parking on Meridian Lane and walking their children to the front of the school for drop off every morning. Carline is much more efficient and safer for you and your child(ren).

We have reports of students almost getting hit by cars as they walk in from that side of the school and they are not being cautious. We are in a good groove and you will get through the carline faster than having to park, walk up to the school, and then walk back to your vehicle.

Remember you can take any carline to drop off in the morning. Students in K and 1st grades should take yellow because they need more support getting out the cars. Thank you!

Melissa Reese,

PYP Principal

Attention: Waiters parents

Waiters was created for the convenience of secondary and primary siblings to be picked up at the same time so parents only have to go through the car line once.

The secondary student must pick up the primary student and be ready to load once their car arrives. Secondary siblings who repeatedly do not pick up their primary sibling immediately will result in the withdrawal of their primary sibling from the Waiters program. If families are not picking up their secondary students on a certain day, you must use Pikmykid to change the primary student to primary pickup for that day.

Waiters staff are not permitted to release students directly to parents who park and walk up to the waiters area. Families must go through an administrator with your car tags. Please review the Waiters dos and don'ts section of the Waiters webpage to familiarize yourself with the Waiters program expectations. Thank you!

IB Initiative: Units of Inquiry

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we will share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Program. This week, we focused on the main components of a unit of inquiry. All the content we explore at Meridian is grouped together into units of study.

Units of inquiry: Our Kindergarten students explore four units of inquiry while all other grades explore six.

Transdisciplinary themes: Each unit of inquiry is tied to one of the six transdisciplinary themes. These themes comprise the majority of what we should learn about our world and how we interact with it.

Central idea: Each unit has a central idea. This statement consists of concepts or big ideas that link together the content to be explored. Finally, each unit has three lines of inquiry - these phrases are a guide to help students understand the direction the unit will be heading. Here is a glimpse into the current units of inquiry that are happening at Meridian, including the transdisciplinary theme and central idea:

Kindergarten: How We Organize Ourselves - Communities are organized to meet the needs and wants of their citizens.

1st grade: Who We Are - Our understanding grows through learning and reflection.

2nd grade: How We Organize Ourselves - Structures influence the way communities function.

3rd grade: How We Express Ourselves - Life experiences drive expression.

4th grade: How the World Works - The physical and human characteristics of a region influence patterns of behavior.

5th grade: Who We Are - Relationships influence identity.

IB Initiative: International-mindedness

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we will share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Program. This week’s focus is international-mindedness. To be internationally-minded means recognizing you are connected to and have a responsibility toward others around the world. There are three main aspects to international-mindedness.

  • Intercultural Understanding - having a deep knowledge and appreciation of cultures.
We can understand something with our head, like how math works, but we can understand with our heart as well, like when we understand how a friend feels because we’ve felt it before. At Meridian, we focus on students learning about cultures - their own and that of others. Exploring similarities and differences can build appreciation as well.

  • Global Engagement - being active in the world
At Meridian, we help students learn what it looks like to take principled and caring actions in their home, school, and community.

  • Multilingualism - learning to understand and speak multiple languages
Learning additional languages builds understanding between people. At Meridian, our primary students have the opportunity to explore Spanish in K-5 and French in 4-5 with an additional opportunity to sign up for Mandarin in our after-school program.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Reese

In an IB school, every working group (teachers or students) starts off by creating 'essential agreements'. In the classroom, this means that, rather than teachers imposing rules, everyone works collaboratively to establish an agreement of how the class will function. It has been so rewarding to see and hear all the classroom conversations about setting up essential agreements the first weeks of school!

By including the students in the process of deciding upon essential agreements to govern and guide behavior, teachers are able to do the following:

  • Ensure engagement as a result of the direct relevance to students’ daily lives

  • Build empowerment by giving them ownership of the rules they need to adhere to

  • Provide the experience of being involved in a collective decision-making process

  • Generate evidence in the form of signed agreements, photographs and reflections

Our students are collaborating, creating wonderful relationships, and setting up expectations with each other and their teachers.

College Shirt Day: Don’t forget the last Wednesday of each month is College Shirt Day and next Wednesday, August 30 is our first one of the school year. Students may wear a shirt with the logo of their favorite university. Uniform bottoms remain the same.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Reese

School is in full swing!

We are only in the second week and we are getting in a good groove of routines and finding classrooms. I am impressed!

Just a friendly reminder, Primary does not allow cell phones and/or smartwatch usage that connects to cellular/data services during the school day. These devices lead to too much of a distraction i n the classroom. At teacher discretion, students may be asked to store the smartwatches in their backpacks as cell phones already need to be off and in a backpack. Please communicate to your student that if they do have a cell phone in their backpack, it needs to stay in the backpack during the school day.

Carline will continue to improve and become faster as we go! Please make sure you are utilizing the carline for drop off in the mornings. It is the fastest and safest way to get your kiddos into the building. If you choose to park and walk them up to the door, please park in the grass on Meridian Lane and walk all the way down to our one crosswalk (we have people there with stop signs). Please do not cross through traffic!

  3. Press green "Announce" button on new screen

If you're a delegate, the children you're picking up will show on the same screen!

  1. Tap "account" on the bottom right hand side of the app

  2. Tap "Manage contacts"

  2. Tap the date on the calendar when you want to delegate

  3. Click on "Change Pickup" below the calendar

  5. Select pickup mode

  6. Once you select the correct carline, a second menu will appear that says, "Who will pick up?"

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Reese

Welcome to the first issue of this school year's PYP Pride!

Our PYP Pride (K–5) newsletter typically goes out Wednesdays in our Weekly Campus News email. It includes important events, notices, and updates, and you can find old issues on our website under PYP Archives. There is a separate newsletter for District, MYP (6–10), and DP (11–12).

It was wonderful to see so many new families at our Primary Cub Camp this week. For those that may have missed it please take a look at the slides to see what we discussed.

Even though you have a few weeks until the first day of school on Wednesday, August 9, we wanted to reach out and send you some important dates and information to help you plan for the new school year. Just a reminder Wednesday, August 9 will be a regular early release day, with school letting out at 1:05 p.m.

Enjoy the last two weeks of summer break!

Melissa Reese,

PYP Principal

PYP (Primary) Back to School Nights

Wednesday, August 2 (Grades 1, 3, 5) and Thursday, August 3 (Grades K, 2, 4)

Visit the primary campus to meet your student's teacher, pick up car tags, shop at the uniform exchange, discover how you can support the school, and purchase spirit wear from RockSports.

To balance the load of cars in the parking lot, we ask families to sign up for a time slot. Please try to arrive near the start of the hour to finish and clear a parking space before the next hour begins.

Fill out a separate form for each student in your family, so we can let our teachers know when to expect them.

1st, 3rd, and 5th grade: Wednesday, August 2nd from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. - sign up

Kinder, 2nd, and 4th grade: Thursday, August 3rd from 4p.m. - 7 p.m. - sign up

tileTeacher assignments: These will be posted in Skyward under the student’s profile by Monday, July 31. To find the name of your child’s teacher, click the Student Profile icon under your child’s name. Your student's teacher will be listed in "School Information" as "Homeroom Teacher."

Backpack checklist

There are a few items your child should bring in their backpack to school. We highly encourage you to label all students items with first and last names. Mabel's Labels makes it easy and they give 20% back to our school if you search and select Meridian School before shopping.

Please note: School supplies ordered this summer go directly to classrooms; no need to pick them up!

  • Backpacks - No, commercialized media characters (i.e. cartoons/movies)

  • Lunch kits - No restrictions. Label items with student’s full name.

  • Reusable water bottle - non spill is preferred

  • Extra clothes in a Ziploc bag (for kinder)

  • A healthy snack

Fast Lane application due August 4

Vehicles picking up four or more students in the afternoons may apply for Fast Lane, which lines up on Meridian Lane off of the service road. Fill out the Fastlane Application no later than August 4. If awarded a spot, you will receive a notification from [email protected]

Wondering about morning traffic? To allow access to the I-35 Service Road, any vehicle with three or more students may use the Green lane. Green lane is more lightly used and gives families plenty of time to unload. There is no need to register for the morning carline.

G Suite for Education: Action required for 2nd–5th grades

Meridian School uses G Suite for Education with all students beginning in 2nd grade. Students use their G Suite accounts to sign into their Chromebooks, complete assignments, communicate with their teachers, and learn 21st century digital citizenship skills.

We ask for parent permission to activate this account initially in 2nd grade and to keep it active each year after that. More information will be provided during Back to School nights.
