FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Happy Wednesday!
Dear Families,
Thank you to everyone who donated cookies to our annual cookie buffet. It is something we look forward to every year and Monday did not disappoint! Our parents/families are the best!
Tomorrow, December 19, students are invited to wear their pajamas for the Winter parties. Please remember there will be no Triple A/After School care on December 19.
Additionally, our primary lost and found is overflowing with coats, sweaters, lunch boxes, and more. With cooler weather hopefully on the horizon, it’s a great time to check for any missing items. As you leave your child’s class party, please stop by the front lobby to look through the lost and found—everything left in Lost and Found after the Winter parties will be donated.
Wishing you all a safe and restful Winter Break!

IB Initiative: the concept of responsibility
Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.
This week we wrap up our look at the main concepts of PYP with the last one: responsibility. Responsibility explores the question, “What are our obligations?” It is our hope that students begin to consider what they should do in response to learning. Specifically, we are connecting this concept back to our exploration of what it means to be an agent of learning. Agency involves voice, choice, and ownership and all of these involve responsibility.
Perspective: Responsibility is a value which connects it to perspective - what an individual, family, or culture considers responsible differs around the world. But like other values, our definition of responsibility drives our actions and our expectations of others.
Rights: Rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. Rights are freedoms - things we can do, while responsibilities are things we should do. We work to help students understand that just because you can do something doesn’t always mean you should do it.
Citizenship: Finally, responsibility is part of citizenship. Citizens learn responsibility by the values of their community and have rights, responsibilities, and agency within their communities.
Over the break and as the new year begins, take time to talk with your child about what your family values when it comes to responsibility.
- There will be no Triple A on Thursday, December 19.
- There will be no Triple A for early release Wednesday students on December 18 (as it's a full school day).
Please arrange for alternate pick-up on these days.
Upcoming enrichment activities:
December 12 - 17: Winter Crafts & Activities - Students create winter themed crafts and/or play winter themed games.
December 18 - 19: New Year’s Resolutions - Students learn about New Year's Resolutions and have the ability to create their own before winter break.
January 7 - 15: MLK - Students learn about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and write speeches to commemorate the day.

IB Initiative: the concept of perspective
Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.
This week, we are exploring the concept of perspective. This concept explores the question, “What are the points of view?” When we explore perspective, we learn that:
- Everyone has a perspective
- We form our perspective from a variety of factors
- We have the right to share our perspective
- We have the obligation to respect the perspective of others
Perspectives come on a scale from simple opinions to beliefs to convictions (values). We try to help students understand that everyone has different perspectives and that’s okay. Our perspectives are influenced by many factors, including authority figures and culture as we are younger, and personal experience and society as we age. Your perspective can change based on these factors as well.
Reflecting on our opinions, beliefs, and values and why we hold them either strengthens those perspectives or pushes us to change them. Learning about someone else’s perspective that is different than yours shouldn’t feel threatening. You don’t have to change your perspective to match someone else, but you do have to be respectful of the perspective of others. At Meridian, we purposefully learn about cultures around the world to practice this important part of being a global citizen.

Happy Wednesday!
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! We are excited about our book fair this week. There is more information about it below.
Also, please remember to send a jacket with your student each day as the days have gotten so much cooler. Make sure any jacket they are wearing in the classroom is in our dress code. Take a look at the Uniform Guide to see what’s okay to wear.
It also helps to put your child’s name and teacher’s name on the jacket’s tag. If we know who the item belongs to, it can be returned to them and doesn’t end up as a long term resident in our lost and found (which is overflowing right now). Mabel's Labels is one of our community partners and they make labels for clothes and other school items. Select Meridian School on their fundraiser page; they give back to the school.
All items left in lost and found at the end of the semester will be donated.
Take care and be safe,
Melissa Reese,
PYP Principal

IB Initiative: the concept of connection
Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.
This week we are learning about the key concept of Connection. Connection is just like it sounds - finding connections or links between people, places, things, and ideas. We can find connections to ourselves, our community, and our world.
Where we find connections:
- We see this in the relationships we are part of, whether they are acquaintances, friends, or family - we are connected.
- In school, students learn about relationships between letters and sounds, between numbers, between living things, and more as they study the content for each grade level.
- Two other concepts involved in connection are interdependence and systems. When two people or other living things are connected, they may reach a level of interdependence, where they rely on each other to meet their needs. Systems have interconnected parts working together to make the system function.
You can bring the key concept of connection into conversations at home as well. Check out this article for thoughts about helping your child make connections.

IB Initiative: the concept of change
Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.
This week, we are exploring the concept of change. We can see change in many aspects of life. Change can happen in visible ways. We can see how things have changed over time. We can also change in a cycle as in the life cycle of an animal or the change in seasons. Some concepts related to change can be both external and internal, both natural and human-driven.
One example is growth. Plants grow – we can see it and it’s part of nature. But we can grow socially, mentally, or spiritually and that growth is driven by our choices.
Adaptation is another example of an internal and external concept. We might adapt the earth by building a dam, and we might also adapt our mindset or our behavior to a new situation.
The final thing we will be learning about change this week is that it is inevitable, so we have to choose how we will respond when change happens.

PYP Counseling Corner
Education Service Center 13 has created a series of eight mindfulness video topics to help parents talk to their children about different social-emotional topics and recognize when there might be a problem that needs to be addressed with a professional counselor or therapist.
In the October 23 newsletter we shared the first video about Gratitude. The third video in the series we would like to share is Being Mindful. Watch the video to learn more about the importance of taking care of your mental health. Keep reading the newsletters for future video topics including: Mental Health, Boundaries, Depression, Self-Care, and Empathy. If you missed a video check out the PYP Newsletter Archives. If you have any questions please email your primary counselor Dana Burks (K, 2, 4) or Heather Mossell (1, 3, 5).
IB Initiative: The Concept of Causation
Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.
This week we are learning about the concept of Causation. This concept focuses on why something is the way it is. I’m sure you’ve experienced your child asking you why about just about everything. We ask why because we have an innate desire to understand more fully and that’s the first thing we usually wonder. Check out this great article explaining this and giving suggestions on how to respond.
This week, on the announcements, we are looking at other big ideas that are part of studying causation. We will explore cause and effect, actions and consequences, sequence, and patterns.

Happy November!
Can you believe it’s already November? Time is flying by! As the weather cools down, jackets are becoming an essential (and sometimes misplaced) item in primary. By winter break our lost and found is often overflowing with unclaimed jackets. Please remember to label your child’s jackets with their name to help us return any that get misplaced.
Also, a quick reminder: jackets worn in the building must meet our uniform guidelines. Before purchasing new jackets or sweaters, please review the uniform policy to ensure your child’s outerwear is suitable for both inside and outside the classroom.
Thank you for your support!

PYP (K–5) Principal’s Coffee
You’re invited to join us on Thursday, November 7, at 8:30 a.m. for the Principal’s Coffee. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with school leadership, hear from Mr. Franklin about Inquiry within the IB program, and ask any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you there! RSVP and let us know you are planning to attend.
Parking: If you plan to attend, please drop your students off using carline; do not walk them in. Please park in the designated visitor parking spots on this map. Doors won’t open until 8:15 a.m. to give us time to clear the lobby for your arrival.
IB Initiative: The Concept of Function
Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.
The concept of Function explores the question, “How does it work?” It begins with identifying the purpose or role of something and then identifying the patterns of behavior that make it work. Systems in our world also have patterns which we usually call processes. These processes are how the system works.
Science exploration is a great place to explore function. Looking at how nature works all on its own or how man-made inventions work can help us better understand the world in which we live.
Also, each family establishes their own procedures for doing things at home. As a connection this week, you can talk with your child about how things work at your home. What systems are in place to ensure everyone is included, safe, and valued at your home?

Exciting Playground Update!
We’re thrilled to share some wonderful news! Thanks to your generosity and support of our Boosterthon fundraiser last year, we were able to install brand-new padded turf on the playground over the fall break, and it is truly fantastic! The students absolutely love it, and it’s brought a new level of fun and safety to their playtime. We’re also excited to announce that, with this upgrade, we were able to reinstall the much-loved monkey bars — one of the most requested items by our students!
Thank you for your continued support and for making these improvements possible. This couldn’t have happened without you!
We have two more dress days left this week. Tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 31 students may wear Halloween accessories (headbands, socks, etc) with their uniforms. Friday, Nov. 1 they may come to school in cultural dress for Diwali or Day of the Dead.

IB Initiative: Concept of Form
Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of the IB or specifically the Primary Years Programme.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) has identified seven concepts that offer depth and breadth across all content areas. We’ll explore each of these concepts for a week between now and winter break, beginning with FORM.
FORM explores the question, “What is it like?”
- To explore FORM is to explore the identifiable properties of an object or topic.
- When we explore two objects or topics, we will begin to see similarities and differences. Comparing the traits of two or more things is part of exploring FORM.
- As we notice the forms of objects and topics, we begin to notice patterns: traits that are true of all or most.

Welcome Back!
We hope you had a fantastic break and are excited to dive into the second nine weeks of the school year! As the weather finally starts to feel more like fall (thank goodness!), we kindly ask that you take a moment to check your child’s jacket to ensure it has their name on it. Our lost and found is already filling up with unmarked items that can’t be returned to their owners. These will be donated at the end of the semester if they are not claimed.
Additionally, please make sure that any jackets worn in the classroom adhere to our dress code. You can review the Uniform Guide to see what’s acceptable.
Mark your calendars: Tuesday, October 29 is wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Thank you for your attention to these details!

IB is a concept-driven curriculum. The units of inquiry that students explore are built on concepts or big ideas. Concepts are broad (cross subjects), abstract (hard to pinpoint only one example), timeless (the same in the past, present, and future), and universal (true around the world).
Here are the concepts (big ideas) that each grade is studying right now:
Kindergarten – Our relationships impact ourselves and others.
1st Grade – Decisions shape our lives and society.
2nd Grade – Innovations pave the way to where we are today.
3rd Grade – Communities foster well-being.
4th Grade – Diversity can strengthen community.
5th Grade – Forces inspire transformation.Upcoming enrichment activities

This week on the announcements, we are not having an IB Initiative. Instead, our focus is participating in Celebrate Freedom Week. Texas law requires students in 3rd-12th grade to celebrate Freedom Week during the week that includes September 17 - Constitution Day.
We extend that to all students as we explore some of the ideals, values, and founding documents of our country on the announcements. Students are learning about the Declaration of Independence, the Constitutional Convention, and the main parts of the Constitution including the Preamble, the structure of the government and the Bill of Rights.

Did you know that most students (and adults) do not get enough sleep each night? The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that:
- Children aged 5 - 12 get between 9 and 12 hours of sleep per night.
- Teenagers should get between 8 - 10 hours of sleep each night.
- Adults should get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep each night.
IB Initiative: Student Agency
Our focus this week is on Student Agency. Agents are people who have the power to act on our behalf, but we want students to see themselves as having the power to act on their own behalf – to become independent, responsible citizens. Agents of learning know how to use their voice, make respectful and responsible choices, and take ownership of their learning.
You can work on encouraging agency in your child at home as well. An excellent resource is the book The Self-Driven Child by William Stixrud and Ned Johnson. Check out the authors’ website for information on the book, their podcast, and other resources.

IB Initiative: Primary Years Program
The goal of all IB programs is to build international-mindedness in our students. To be internationally-minded means recognizing you are connected to and have a responsibility toward others around the world. There are three main parts of international-mindedness.
-
Intercultural Understanding - having a deep knowledge and appreciation of cultures.
We can understand something with our head, like how math works, but we can understand with our heart as well, like when we understand how a friend feels because we’ve felt it before. At Meridian, we focus on students learning about cultures - their own and that of others. Exploring similarities and differences can build appreciation as well. -
Global Engagement - being active in the world
At Meridian, we help students learn what it looks like to take principled and caring actions in their home, school, and community. -
Multilingualism - learning to understand and speak multiple languages
Learning additional languages builds understanding between people. At Meridian, our primary students have the opportunity to explore Spanish in K-5 and French in 4-5 with an additional opportunity to sign up for Mandarin in our after-school program.

IB Initiative: Welcome
The Primary Years Program (PYP) is the foundational program in the IB continuum. It is in this program where we introduce and grow students in many of the components that will carry them throughout their years in IB.
At the heart of our program (as well as the other IB programs) is the Learner Profile. These 10 traits help us see the characteristics we all strive to attain. We build a foundation of seeing learning not in isolation. Students are encouraged to find the relevance of what they are learning to other subjects and to the real world.
Speaking of subjects, the Primary Years Program encourages students to learn through a balanced curriculum that includes math, science, language, social studies, the arts, and personal, social, and physical education.
Finally, in the Primary Years Program we begin to teach students skills that are transferable to all walks of life. We call these Approaches to Learning. The Primary Years Program builds a foundation for students that they will carry through school and into their lives beyond school as well.

Happy Wednesday!
We seem to be off to such a great start to this new school year! Both morning and afternoon carlines have been running efficiently. Remember to ‘announce’ each day on your Pikmykid app.
We are trying to maneuver through these very hot days and still trying to get our students outside to release some energy! Most grades get one recess earlier in the morning and another after lunch. With the heat, afternoon recess is either cut short or it happens indoors during that scheduled time. We monitor the heat index day by day and will follow this practice until we are out of the excessive heat warnings. Please make sure your kiddo has a labeled water bottle they can refill as needed throughout the day.
We sure are thankful for AC!

Each week on the primary announcements and in the PYP Pride Newsletter, we share information about an element of IB or PYP. IB stands for International Baccalaureate.
International because the organization works with schools all around the world. In fact, there are programs offered in 5,700 schools in 160 countries!
The word Baccalaureate pertains to education, particularly one that promotes learning beyond high school. PYP stands for Primary Years Program.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Just a friendly reminder, Primary does not allow cell phones and/or smartwatch usage that connects to cellular/data services during the school day. These devices lead to too much of a distraction in the classroom. Please communicate to your student that if they do have a cell phone, it needs to stay in the backpack during the school day.
Carline will continue to improve and become faster as we go! Please make sure you are utilizing the carline for drop off in the mornings. It is the fastest and safest way to get your kiddos into the building and get you on your way to start your day! In the afternoon, please make sure you announce through Pikmykid so we can have your kiddo(s) lined up ready to load as you pull up!

Welcome back! If you do not know me – my name is Melissa Reese and I am the principal of the primary school (K-5). I have been at Meridian since 2018 and I absolutely love being a part of this wonderful school. I am an educator, wife, mom, and grandmother! I love spending time with my family and my furbabies on my time off. I am currently working on my PhD and traveling when I can. I am excited to get back into the school year and see all our students! Please reach out to me throughout the school year if I can assist you in any way.
Carline reminders:
- Please pull your vehicle completely forward and close any gaps between you and the vehicle in front.
- After 7:55 a.m. we will not have staff assisting students out of vehicles. Students will need to get out of the vehicle and walk into the primary building on their own.
- Parents do not exit your vehicle during carline.
Remember to be patient in the carline the first few days and then we will be running at a faster, more efficient pace as the days go by. I promise!
Melissa Reese,
