College Updates for Seniors & Parents/Guardians

The big fall deadlines have passed, and students should now be activating their portals at the schools where they submitted applications in order to keep track of their admissions progress.

The next round of applications will be after we return to campus on January 7. If a student has already used Common App, there is no need to request documents from the school for additional applications. However, if they are submitting their first application they will need to see Mrs. Gregg or Mr. Manuszak as soon as possible after we return on January 7 to be sure everything is submitted correctly.

The  FAFSA opened on December 1, and the Texas priority deadline is February 15. The first step for both parents and students  is to set up an account so you're ready to submit the FAFSA.  Read this great FAFSA resource for answers to all your FAFSA questions.

Interested in summer study abroad opportunities?

Two students smile and wave as they tour abroad

Interested in study abroad opportunities for high school students in countries like Japan, Italy, France, Spain, Costa Rica, and more?  The Council On International Educational Exchange (CIEE), a non-profit organization dedicated to global education for over 75 years, offers programs for high school students and graduating seniors. Their Summer Abroad programs are 3-4 weeks with a cost range from $4,000-$8,000.

CIEE programs can be split into two types: Language and Culture and Topic/Thematic Experiences

  • Language and Culture programs are four weeks long and have a home stay experience.
  • Topic programs are three weeks long and have a hostel or dorm housing with a program leader. They are focused on project based learning and fall under one of these four categories: STEM, business, the arts, or social change. The topics are tailored to the location. For example, entrepreneurship in Singapore and Berlin will have differences based on location.

Meridian students who have participated in these programs in the past have shared favorable reviews about their experiences, and they align with the IB mission of international mindedness so we are sharing this information in case you are interested.

For more information: see this this flier on summer 2025 programs. If you missed the Zoom meeting, fill out this form and we will send you the recording.

Stela

DP Families,

We have an AB Day scheduled this Friday, November 22. It's very important that students attend school because we have special programming planned for them. Full diploma juniors will do some important opening work on their Extended Essay, and a number of juniors and seniors will be involved with TSI Math testing. We also have our annual Career & Volunteer Fair this Friday; my husband, Lee Holcombe, will host a table to share information with our students about the Peace Corps.

The weekend immediately after break is our annual 24-hour Senior Lock In. Please sign up here as we cannot have this event without the support of parent chaperones! We need help making sure seniors stay in designated areas. You can bring a book to read or work to do at your post!

This week, our SIC club volunteered to help cover the crosswalk to give our faculty more time in their classrooms. They did a great job!

Two Host Families Needed

We have two foreign exchange students, who, through no fault of their own, are in need of a new host family. Both are amazing kids, and both are loving their experience in Texas and at Meridian. They are here through the EF International cultural exchange program overseen by the US Department of State.  The students come with their own health insurance, and an allowance from home to cover any school expenses, as well as their own personal needs such as cell phone, pizza out with friends, shopping sprees, etc. Host families promise to feed and nurture them and provide a reasonable amount of transportation to school and social activities.

Paula is a Junior at Meridian, and Mario is in tenth grade. Families do not need to have a teenager in the home, and quite often, it is families with younger children who really love having a teen around. Action Requested: If you or someone you know would be interested in hosting one of these students please reach out to Stela Holcombe and she will connect you with the local EF coordinator, Bev Thomas.

Week of October 23, 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Stela

DP Families,

Thank you for your understanding of our need to close school on Monday. We don't like losing instructional time and causing stress for our families, but sometimes it's unavoidable.

Last week our DP Theater students enjoyed a trip to visit UT's theater department, and this week our DP Visual Arts students will visit the Blanton Museum on the UT campus. Mr. Morales invited his Year 1 Environmental Science classes to do some field work at Garey Park on weekend days in September and October. All of these students had a great time learning off campus and bonding with their teachers and each other. I'm so thankful for our DP teachers for creating these special opportunities for our students!

ESS

Mr. Morales and Year 1 Environmental Science students.

This week is Red Ribbon Week! We are working closely with our Student Council as they undertake activities that encourage students and staff to reflect on the importance of living a drug-free lifestyle. Students are learning about the history of Red Ribbon Week, signing banners pledging to remain drug-free, wearing red awareness bracelets, decorating advisory doors, and they are enjoying themed dress up days. Please read our Red Ribbon Week Parent/Guardian resources.

Reach out to us if we can support you and your student in any way.

Two Host Families Needed

We have two foreign exchange students, who, through no fault of their own, are in need of a new host family. Both are amazing kids, and both are loving their experience in Texas and at Meridian. They are here through the EF International cultural exchange program overseen by the US Department of State. The program originated to enhance cultural relationships between our country and countries abroad. It has been doing just that since the early 1960s, thanks to the generous nature of American families. Through this cultural exchange program, students are hosted by a family and attend a local high school, and they learn what life is really like here in our country. Everyone ends up with amazing memories and a family for life on the other side of the world.

The students come with their own health insurance, and an allowance from home to cover any school expenses, as well as their own personal needs such as cell phone, pizza out with friends, shopping sprees, etc. Host families promise to feed and nurture them and provide a reasonable amount of transportation to school and social activities.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Stela

The school year is off to a great start!

Mr. Manuszak and I will meet with seniors this Thursday, during advisory, to share a hard copy of their most updated high school transcript. These will be shared with colleges and universities that they will be applying to for Fall 2025. It is important that these transcripts are reviewed very carefully. We will also make some decisions about senior activities such as Senior Parking Space Painting (we need to set a new date), Prom 2025 theme selection, Founder's Day fundraiser, and Homecoming!

Juniors have been introduced to Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) and I see that many are already logging and reflecting on their CAS experiences in ManageBac!

Lastly, in case you missed it last week, you can access the tutorial schedule for the entire DP teacher team, as well as the course syllabi for all of our DP courses in this handy document.

Tuesday, September 10 from 5-6:30 p.m.

Are you curious to meet your student's DP teachers in person? If yes, then mark your calendar for our High School Open House! Students are invited to attend with their parent/guardian (to help them find their classes), or you can attend without your student. Put on your comfy walking shoes and join us!

Note: This is not a "come and go" event. You will want to arrive by 5 p.m. to enjoy the full experience. More info to come in next week's newsletter!

Tuesday, September 10 from 6:30-7 p.m.

Parents/guardians of seniors who are taking Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Please mark your calendars to attend Meridian's 3rd Annual "TOK Exhibition" on Tuesday, September 10 from 6:30-7 p.m. This will take place in the high school upstairs common area right after the High School Open House scheduled on this same evening from 5-6:30 p.m.

What is the TOK Exhibition? The TOK Exhibition is the internal assessment for Theory of Knowledge. Each student chooses one question from a bank of 35 prompts, all of which explore the nature of knowledge in some way. The Exhibition is an opportunity to examine how TOK manifests in the real world. Top 10% Notification

Top 10% ranking is based on semester grades earned through the end of the junior year. We did a manual calculation to ensure accuracy in the determination of Top 10%.

Seniors who achieved Top 10% ranking were notified by Mrs. Gregg via email on Tuesday, August 13. If you have questions about this, please reach out to Ms. Holcombe or Mrs. Gregg.

Transcript requests for seniors

Seniors, we will meet with you soon to take a look at your six-semester transcript. You will have the opportunity to inform us if anything looks "off" before we begin fulfilling requests for transcripts for your college applications.

Attention, student drivers!

All questions about parking should be directed to Ms. Riley. Parking is very tight this year with seniors occupying most of our available spaces.

As you come back to school, you will notice that almost all of the parking spots in our lots have been numbered for staff and students. If you are not registered to park on campus and your vehicle is found on school property, you receive a disciplinary referral and a consequence. For safety, we must have a record of everyone who parks on campus.

Students should also not park in our surrounding businesses. This could result in your student’s vehicle getting towed.

Important: student drivers in spots 1-22

Students who park along Blue Lane in spots 1-22: please do not do pull out of your spot before 4:20 p.m. all year - every day. This helps secondary carline move quickly after school which benefits our student drivers and our families. Backing out into secondary carline traffic can be dangerous and it backs the carline up into Mays. We appreciate your cooperation.

Week of August 8, 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Stela

Welcome Back for the 2024-2025 school year!

We loved welcoming our students back today! I'm excited to get to know the juniors, the Class of 2026! Seniors, Mr. Manuszak will serve as your faculty sponsor this year; we will work together to help make this a fun, memorable year!

The seniors enjoyed the sunrise at Old Settlers Park this morning to celebrate their "last first day" of school.

This year we welcome four new DP faculty members. All of them come to us with prior IB DP experience, two of them are examiners for the IB Organization, and three of them have taught internationally. How lucky are we?!

  • Amber Baker, DP Chemistry SL and HL and Physics
  • Rachna Gandhi, DP Computer Science SL (and also MYP Computer Science)
  • Melissa Petrich, DP Math Analysis SL and HL
  • Leah Trainham, DP History SL and HL

Please note that we will continue the practice of having DP students put their cell phones away in cell phone pockets during class. The purpose of this is to maintain the quality of the learning environment in our classrooms. I have encouraged the DP teacher team to give students a break either during or at the end of class to check their phones. If you have any questions or concerns about this, reach out to me.

Looking forward to a great year!
